Sunday, September 13 will mark the final day of regular operations at the Aquadome, closing a chapter nearly 60 years in the making.
Born from the vision of Mayor Russell Blackburn in the 1960s, the Aquadome was an innovative approach to recreational architecture and a bold investment in recreation for a growing Decatur. In the decades since, it has become much more than a building. It has been a pillar of our community as a place where generations of Decatur residents have learned to swim, played, exercised, gathered, competed, celebrated and connected.
Nearly 60 years of recreation means nearly 60 years of memories. While it is bittersweet to see this chapter come to an end, we are incredibly grateful for every person who has walked through the Aquadome's doors and made it part of Decatur's story.
As we say goodbye to a longtime community landmark, we're also preparing for what's next.
Fort Decatur Recreation Center will continue its normal operations during this transition, and the new Decatur Recreation Center will open Monday, September 21, with open gym, lap swim, fitness classes and more of our core programs. Stay tuned for the full facility schedule and more details!
