The Greater Atlanta Buffalo Soldiers

The Greater Atlanta Buffalo Soldiers Our mission is to remember those heroes both living and dead who served this nation with pride and distinction... The Buffalo Soldiers! Flipper.

During the American Civil War, the U.S. government formed regiments known as the United States Colored Troops, composed of black soldiers. After the war, Congress reorganized the Army and authorized the formation of two regiments of black cavalry with the designations 9th and 10th U.S. Cavalry, and four regiments of black infantry, designated the 38th, 39th, 40th and 41st Infantry Regiments (Color

ed). The 38th and 41st were reorganized as the 25th Infantry Regiment, with headquarters in Jackson Barracks in New Orleans, Louisiana, in November 1869. The 39th and 40th were reorganized as the 24th Infantry Regiment, with headquarters at Fort Clark, Texas, in April 1869. All of these units were composed of black enlisted men commanded by both white and black officers. These included the first commander of the 10th Cavalry Benjamin Grierson, the first commander of the 9th Cavalry Edward Hatch, Medal of Honor recipient Louis H. Carpenter, the unforgettable Nicholas M. Nolan, and the first black graduate of West Point, Henry O.

A sister publication to William A. Gladstone's Men of Color" is a second book: United States Colored Troops, 1863-1867 .

Published twice, once in 1990, and again in 1996, this book is a 130+ page reference and research book that looks at the formation, establishment, training, equipping and fielding of the more than 100 U.S.C.T Regiments created during the Civil War.

It gets high marks for its focus on primary source material and for highlighting the often overlooked African American contributions to Union victory in the War.

Using official records of the USCT, Gladstone's research points out what black soldiers and their uniforms actually looked like, helping to combat the, "sterilized narrative of history," in schools and popular media.

It covers the period 1863–1867, detailing the organization and service of the United States Colored Troops.

John Morton-Finney lived an extraordinary life. He was born in 1889, and he faced barriers that made education and professional success difficult. But he never stopped trying. He served in the U.S. Army as a Buffalo Soldier with the 24th Infantry Regiment, went on to earn 11 college degrees, taught for 47 years, and became a lawyer later in life.

John passed away on January 28, 1998. He spent more than a century learning, teaching, and working in the law. He kept going when most people would have stopped. Few people know his story, but it shows what a lifetime of persistence can look like.
