IN LOVING MEMORY: The Austin High School and Decatur City Schools communities mourn the loss of Dr. Don Snow, a dedicated educator, mentor, and steadfast leader who passed away last night. Serving Decatur City Schools from 1992 until his retirement in January 2022, Dr. Snow built a 30-year legacy defined by deep personal investment in his students, faculty, and community.
Throughout his three decades of service, Dr. Snow shaped Austin High School's culture. His influence extended far beyond administrative duties—he believed in people, championed their potential, and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to care for his school family.
"The AHS family extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Don Snow's family on his passing. Dr. Snow was a tremendous leader who devoted his career to Austin High School and Decatur City Schools. Dr. Snow was committed to the students, faculty, staff, and the entire Austin High community. I will always be grateful for the role Dr. Snow played in my career. He gave me the opportunity to serve as the Head Basketball Coach at Austin High School, and he was instrumental in guiding and encouraging me as I transitioned into school administration. His belief in me and his willingness to invest in my future profoundly shaped the person and educational leader I am today. On behalf of the entire Austin High School community, we extend our heartfelt condolences, thoughts, and prayers to his wife, Sonya, his daughter, Mary Beth, and his entire family. May they find comfort in the many lives Dr. Snow touched and in the lasting legacy he leaves behind." — Demond Garth, Austin High School Principal
"Don meant so much to so many of us. He was our friend, mentor, and most of all family. People say perception is reality, but with Don that was far from the truth. Behind his tough exterior was a man with a bigger heart than anyone would know. He never wanted the spotlight, but worked behind the scenes to take care of his people in ways no one ever knew. He loved Austin High School, and all the people that made it such a special place to be. Don impacted so many lives, especially mine. Once a Black Bear, Always a Black Bear." — Reesa Chittam, Retired Principal, Career Academies of Decatur
Even after concluding his remarkable 30-year career in public education, Dr. Snow continued to serve the community he cherished.
"Don knew and kept a check on everyone. Whether you knew him for 15 days or 25 years as I did, everyone had a 'Don Snow' story. After retirement, Don went on to have a successful career in real estate where he helped many people in the DCS family purchase a home." — Dwight Satterfield, Deputy Superintendent
Dr. Don Snow’s impact on Austin High School, Decatur City Schools, and the countless individuals he mentored will endure for generations to come. Our deepest thoughts and prayers remain with his entire family during this difficult time.
