ALDOT will close I-65 northbound at Exit 318 at Lacon in Morgan County for one night next week to repair the deck of the northbound bridge over the CSX railroad.

Weather permitting, ALDOT plans to close the northbound roadway about 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, and detour all northbound traffic to US-31.

The closure will continue into Wednesday, June 3. The time required for the repair and the duration of the closure will depend on the amount of time permitted for work above the railroad. Crews can work only when there is no train traffic.

🚧Northbound detour
▪️ALDOT will temporarily reopen US-31 northbound for the duration of the I-65 closure. About one mile of US-31 just north of I-65 is currently closed for concrete slab replacement.

▪️US-31 southbound between on US-31 and Lacon Road/Old Highway 31 and I-65 will remain closed.

▪️A temporary signal at the junction of US-31 and the northbound off-ramp will regulate traffic.

▪️From US-31, passenger traffic can take Thompson Road in Hartselle to I-65.

▪️Commercial traffic must continue north to SR-67 in Decatur and return to I-65 in Priceville.

🚧Wide loads must detour at Exit 310 in Cullman and take SR-157 northbound to SR-24 eastbound in Moulton and then SR-67 northbound to SR-20 eastbound in Decatur.

▪️Message boards and signs will direct motorists. State troopers will assist with traffic control.

Planned replacement
Design is ongoing for replacement of the I-65 bridges over the CSX railroad, as well as the bridges over Flint Creek immediately south of the railroad. ALDOT currently anticipates letting the project in late FY2027.

Traffic stop leads to vehicle pursuit, foot pursuit and resisting arrest charges

On May 26, 2026, a Morgan County Sheriff's Deputy initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling Eastbound on Hwy 36 in Somerville. The vehicle initially turned on its turn signal before accelerating in an attempt to flee, and throwing an item from the vehicle. Deputies radioed for assistance, and a Deputy got in position to spike the fleeing vehicle's tires. The spike was successful on both front tires, but the vehicle continued driving on the car's rims.

The vehicle turned south on Hwy 231 before coming to a stop at Dunlap Trailer Park, where the subject fled on foot. Deputies deployed their tazer and eventually subdued the subject. The subject was checked by EMS at the scene and at Decatur Morgan Hospital before being booked into the Morgan County Jail.

Paul Douglas White, 49 of Fort Payne, AL was charged with:

▪️13A-10-52 - Attempting to Elude a Police Officer Bond $5000.00
▪️13A-10-41 - Resisting Arrest Bond $300.00
▪️13A-12-260 - Unlawful Possession Drug Paraphernalia Bond $300.00
