The estimated population in 2006 was 55,778. Decatur, Alabama – boasts a rich heritage and a dynamic future. A LITTLE LABOR DAY BREAK

Even City Hall gets a day off for Labor Day.

City of Decatur offices will be closed Monday, Sept. 7, as we tip our hats to the workers, past and present, whose hard work, skill, and service helped build our country and continue to move our communities forward.

We’ll be back at it Tuesday, Sept. 8, when offices reopen on their regular schedules.

A NEW WAY TO MAKE A SPLASH AT POINT MALLARD

City and State leaders, Decatur Parks and Recreation, and project partners gathered this afternoon to cut the ribbon on Point Mallard Park’s new accessible kayak launch, floating dock, and self-service kayak rentals.

The new amenity gives residents and visitors another way to explore Flint Creek and the waterways surrounding Point Mallard. Paddlers may bring their own nonmotorized watercraft or reserve a single or tandem kayak through HIVE PaddleSports.

Rentals include a kayak, paddle, life jacket with whistle, and dry bag. HIVE’s self-service system allows paddlers to reserve and unlock their equipment using a mobile device.

The launch is near the walking trail between Point Mallard Water Park and the pickleball complex. It provides access to the Flint Creek Exploratory Paddle Area and routes leading toward the Tennessee River.

The Decatur City Council authorized up to $170,000 for the project, which also required approval from the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Thank you to everyone who helped bring this new outdoor experience to Point Mallard and the Decatur community.

BUDGET REQUESTS FIRST. A PACKED SEPTEMBER AGENDA NEXT.

The Decatur City Council will meet at 4 p.m. today to hear from nonprofits and agencies seeking funding in the city’s proposed fiscal year budget. A council work session will follow.

Council members will preview next week’s agenda, including eight rezoning requests, a proposed $264,000 Carnegie Visual Arts Center annex, Cherry Street sewer design work, a new public access road near Point Mallard Parkway and Country Club Road, Fire & Rescue restructuring, landfill and recycling fee changes, and an amended Rock the South agreement.

The agenda also includes $357,859 in fourth-quarter budget adjustments and a proposed pay increase to recruit and retain CDL-certified Landfill and Recycling truck drivers.

Tonight’s work session is for discussion. Proposed actions are scheduled for the
Tuesday, Sept. 8, regular meeting or subsequent public hearings.

The punch list is shrinking. The excitement is not.

Contractors are completing final details at the new Decatur Recreation Center, while Parks and Recreation staff are already training inside the facility ahead of its public opening in September.

Four courts. A 10-lane, 25-yard pool. An elevated walking track. An inclusive playground. And free general access through a community membership.

STORM RECOVERY UNDERWAY ACROSS DECATUR

Crews are hard at work this morning following last night’s storms, which left downed trees, damaged utility poles, power lines, and debris across Decatur.

These photos show some of the damage at Stratford Road and Country Club Road, where fallen trees pulled down power lines and damaged utility poles and traffic signals.

Decatur Utilities crews are working to restore power at this location and throughout the Decatur area. Once power is restored at Stratford and Country Club, the intersection will temporarily operate as a four-way stop while the damaged traffic signal system is repaired. Drivers should expect the temporary stop signs to remain in place for approximately one month.

Please slow down, stay alert, and use extra caution as you travel today, particularly in areas where power remains out or crews are working. Never approach a downed power line, and please give utility and City crews plenty of room to work safely.

A tremendous thank you to Decatur Utilities and our City of Decatur departments and employees who have worked tirelessly since the storm passed to clear roads, remove debris, assess damage, restore services, and begin repairs.

There is still work ahead, but crews across Decatur are getting it done.

Please be patient. Please be cautious. And please look out for the people working to put our city back together.

Decatur is putting in the work, and the numbers are clocking in.

A review of newly released data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the Decatur metro ranks among Alabama’s leaders:
• No. 4 in average annual wages
• No. 5 in estimated employment growth

Average annual wages reached $57,830, a 15.1% increase from 2022. Estimated employment grew 8.3% during the same period.

A new chapter began today at Point Mallard.

The newly renovated Decatur Event Center welcomed one of its first major gatherings, the eighth annual State of the Region. Formerly the Point Mallard Ice Complex, the facility has been transformed into a beautiful, versatile venue designed to host meetings, conferences, celebrations, and other events for Decatur and the North Alabama region.

Presented by Launch, the State of the Region brought together dignitaries, community leaders, and regional partners from across North Alabama. Launch represents a partnership of 13 counties working together and speaking with one voice to advance the region.

Mayor Kent Lawrence welcomed attendees to Decatur and celebrated the collaboration that continues to strengthen North Alabama.

Today’s event showcased more than a renewed facility. It demonstrated Decatur’s growing role as a place where communities connect, partnerships form, and the region moves forward together.
