Be Weather Aware today.

All Modes of Severe Weather Possible This Afternoon and Evening, Including Strong Tornadoes

Storms look to develop between 4-6 pm in south-central South Dakota.
Supercells are expected initially, capable of all severe hazards including large hail up to 2” in diameter, tornadoes, and damaging winds to 70 mph.
A strong tornado cannot be ruled out. An Intensity Level 1 (CIG1) area was added by the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), which indicates the reasonable max strength of a tornado is an EF-2.

Storms will then develop into a line as they move eastward, transitioning to mainly a 70 mph wind threat, though brief spin-up tornadoes are possible along the leading edge of the line.
This severe threat will continue through about 10pm-Midnight, weakening as it moves in northwest Iowa later tonight.

Severe weather remains possible Thursday and Friday. More details on these threats in the next packet.

Today
A broken line of storms develops in central SD mid-late afternoon. These storms have a potential to quickly become severe.
Large hail of 2 inches or larger will be the primary threat with initial storms in the late afternoon.
As storms move southeast during the evening, the primary threat will transition to damaging winds up to 70 mph.
The line of storms weakens as it moves southeast after 10 pm to midnight.

Thursday
Trends are pointing toward storm development in south-central & southeast SD by late Thursday afternoon, the threat winds down by Midnight Thursday night.
Large hail & damaging winds are the primary threats.
The impact of tonight’s storms on location & coverage of initial development is unclear. Monitor the latest forecast for updates.

Friday
Isolated strong to severe storms are possible in the late afternoon and evening.
If conditions align favorably following Thursday night/early Friday storms, a more organized storm threat may bring a greater risk of large hail and damaging winds to portions of Nebraska, Iowa and far southern Minnesota.

Monday
Conditional Level 1 of 5 risk for severe storms later today.
Low confidence that storms will develop late this afternoon/evening. However, if a storm can form and turn severe, large hail and damaging winds are the primary threats.
Development is slightly favored in areas near and east of I-29.

Tuesday
Low chance of storms along the Missouri River Valley early Tuesday morning. Severe risks at this time are low.
Strong to severe storms focus across the western Dakotas Tuesday afternoon, but could drift into far western parts of our forecast area (west of Huron to Lake Andes) Tuesday evening.
If storms maintain strength, isolated damaging winds and large hail are the primary threats.

Wednesday
Severe storm risks will shift a bit farther east, with a Level 1 to 2 out of 5 risk across eastern South Dakota and a small portion of southwest Minnesota.
Timing and location of late-day severe risks may depend on how quickly early day storms clear the area.
Higher severe risk is currently focused north of Wessington Springs to De Smet.
