🇺🇸 25 Years Later — We Remember.

Twenty-five years ago today, our nation changed forever.

On September 11, 2001, 2,977 lives were lost, including 343 FDNY firefighters, along with law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and countless innocent people who simply began that morning like any other.

For those of us in Fire & EMS, September 11 carries a weight that never fades. We remember the firefighters and first responders who climbed the stairs while others were coming down. We remember their courage, their sacrifice, and their unwavering commitment to helping others.

Today, the members of DeForest Windsor Fire & EMS pause to honor every life lost, every family forever changed, and every first responder who answered the call.

Twenty-five years have passed, but we have not forgotten.

We will never forget.

***PRESS RELEASE***

Saturday September 5th, 2026

On Saturday September 5th, 2026 at approximately 8:15pm, the Deforest Windsor Fire & EMS Department responded to a water rescue at 4633 Liuna Way in the Village of Deforest. The report was for a person who had taken their canoe down the Yahara River, became disoriented, and was unable to make their way out. The person was located roughly a quarter mile south of the responding address via drone using a thermal imaging camera. Crews began making their
way to the stranded person on foot to assist with escorting them out. Mutual aid partners were requested, including two air boats, to assist with the rescue. Due to the conditions of the river, the boats were unable to be utilized. A second crew was sent by foot to assist with removing the person from the marsh. At approximately 10:15pm, all crews exited the marsh
with the patient who was turned over to EMS for care. There were no injuries or further incidents reported.

DWFD would like to thank the following agencies who responded to assist with the incident: Waunakee Fire Department, Madison Fire Department (Lake Rescue), DeForest Police Department, Dane County Sheriff’s Office (Water Rescue).

This recognition is a direct reflection of the commitment, professionalism, and dedication our department brings to our EMS system every day. Achieving this level of recognition requires consistent attention to patient care, clinical excellence, documentation, teamwork, and a commitment to doing things the right way on every call.

While an award like this is something our department can be proud of, the real accomplishment is what it represents — the quality of care we provide to the patients and communities we serve.

BIG THINGS ARE HAPPENING!

We are excited to share some updates on the DeForest Windsor Fire & EMS Station #2!
Construction has officially begun on the station with the elevator wall going up along with some exterior walls.

This project is a huge step forward in strengthening our ability to serve and protect our community, and we can't wait to show you more as construction continues.

Yesterday, DeForest Windsor Fire & EMS crews spent the day sharpening their skills and working together on several important fireground operations.

Training included:
Drafting operations
Relay pumping
Fire attack
Pumping with our aerial apparatus

These skills require strong communication, coordination, and plenty of hands-on practice. Training together helps ensure our crews are prepared to work safely and efficiently when the call comes in.

As students return to school next month, DeForest Windsor Fire & EMS reminds everyone to use extra caution around school buses, bus stops, and school zones. Watch for flashing lights, stop when required, and always be prepared for children crossing the road.
A few extra seconds of patience behind the wheel can make all the difference. Help us keep our kids safe this school year! 🚒📚

For Immediate Release

On Monday, July 13th , 2026, at approximately 05:40 AM, the DeForest Windsor Fire & EMS Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire in the 4400 block of Windsor Road in the Village of Windsor. Initial reports from law enforcement indicated that smoke was visible from the exterior of the building. Based on this updated information, a MABAS box alarm was requested to the first box level.

When fire crews arrived, heavy smoke was showing from the rear of the structure. All occupants of the building had self-evacuated and were accounted for. Crews quickly entered the building and were met with heavy smoke conditions. The fire was located in the basement of the building and quickly brought under control.

The origin of the fire is believed to be a dehumidifier that was in use in the basement of the building. Fortunately, there was limited structural damage from the fire, however there will be a large loss of business time and products due to the heavy smoke damage.

DeForest and Waunakee EMS were on scene and provided firefighter rehab and support throughout the incident. There were no injuries to firefighters or building occupants.

DWFD would like to thank the following agencies who responded to assist with this incident: Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Waunakee Fire Department, Waunakee EMS, Madison Fire Department, and Arlington Fire Department. Lodi Fire Department and Sun Prairie EMS also responded to the DeForest Windsor Fire Station providing coverage for other incidents during this time.
