📢 Volusia County Public Library will host its How To Festival this Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the library’s six regional branches. The Volusia-Flagler TPO will be at the Port Orange Regional Library to give a presentation at 11:00 am on being Street Smart: Walking, Biking, Scootering, and Driving Safely. We will also have a table at the event to hand out information and items that will help keep you safe!

Discover something new as local experts, hobbyists, and professionals share their talents, skills, and know-how through demonstrations and workshops. From practical skills to new hobbies and interests, there will be plenty to learn throughout the day! Participating branches include:

🚲 Volusia County is inviting you to celebrate its newest trail segment!

Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
🕘 9 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9
📍 Intersection of West Highbanks Road and Donald E. Smith Boulevard, DeBary
Community Bike Rides Before the Ceremony
🕢 7:30 a.m.
📍 Rides will depart from Thornby Park and Lake Beresford Park and end at the ribbon-cutting ceremony
County of Volusia Council members will celebrate alongside partners from the St Johns River-to-Sea Loop Alliance, SUN Trail, FDOT Central Florida, and the City of DeBary to celebrate closing this gap in the Spring-to-Spring Trail and the larger St. Johns River to Sea Loop.

The 1.3-mile paved segment runs along Donald E. Smith Boulevard from Highbanks Road north to DeBary Plantation Road. Volusia County oversaw construction of the $1.23 million project, which was funded by SUN Trail and the Florida Department of Transportation. Going forward, the City of DeBary will maintain the segment.
Parking will be available in the DeBary Elementary School student drop-off lane.

📈 This right here is why we do what we do: going from a 34% driver yield rate to 89%! A huge shout-out to all involved in the changes made at this intersection City of Palm Coast, FL - Government Best Foot Forward

🚦 A safer crosswalk starts with the right combination of tools.

At Town Center Blvd & Royal Palms Pkwy in Flagler County, preliminary data shows a 55-pt. increase in drivers stopping for people crossing, from 34% to 89%, following engineering improvements and enforcement.

The improvements included:
🛑 All-way stop with LED stop signs
🚶 “Stop Here for Pedestrians” signage
🛣️ New stop bar markings
〰️ Rumble strips

We’re grateful to the City of Palm Coast, FL - Government for working with us to identify opportunities to improve safety at this crossing.

📈 Preliminary results like these show how engineering and enforcement can work together to help create safer crossings.
