Last week, we let you in on our exciting news - we have a brand new crisis-relief fund dedicated to meeting the needs of our community! Seniors, their loved ones, or worried neighbors call out of fear that older adults are starving.

Sadly, they are often correct.

In August of 2025, we received a call from one of those neighbors, worried about an older gentleman who lived in their mobile home community. When we arrived, we were devastated - but not surprised - to find a state of severe self-neglect. Russel had lost his will to live almost entirely. His own family had exploited his trust and removed all but 39 cents from his account. With his money stolen and his trust betrayed, he was behind on his rent payments, facing eviction, and suffering from severe depression.

When our Case Manager Sherri first checked in on him (bringing a warm meal), Russel had no food or running water. He only had power because a kind neighbor had allowed him to run an extension cord into their home. He had lost hope entirely. Even so, his first request when we visited him was to ask for pet food for his two dogs.

We’re happy to report that we were able to provide for him and his four-legged friends immediately. Within a day, case managers delivered food, water, and pet food. He was added to a Meals on Wheels route and was provided with a Pet Meals on Wheels delivery. We were able to ensure he was not evicted and helped him get his lot payments back on track and restore his power.

Russel is now receiving COA services regularly, including in-home care, pest control, and transportation to any necessary medical appointments. COA's handyman helped make necessary repairs to his home, including fixing his door to make entry and exit safer. He is no longer trapped and tells us that his world is getting brighter. After being exploited, Russel was uncomfortable with technology and was at risk of losing his Medicaid Benefits. However, a case manager was able to sit with him to guide him through the process.

Situations like these remind us of why COA is so important—we are one of the only remaining services that can be accessed via a simple phone call. For people like Russel, this is their only option.

Our favorite part of this story is that we were also able to provide Russel with his first haircut in months.

This is what Council on Aging does; this is who Council on Aging is. We believe that every older adult in our community should be granted the dignity they deserve, especially in their golden years.

Are you or a loved one living with Alzheimer's Disease? This month, during Alzheimer's and Brain Health awareness month, we'll be talking about strategies to keep moving forward.

This week, we're focusing on tips for daily life, which can seem overwhelming.

1. Set realistic goals and focus on what is possible that day, using the skills you have to be successful.
2. Develop a routine to make the day easier. Having a schedule can make it easier to go through the days.
3. Recognize the things that stress you or your loved ones out, and work to remove them. Many people living with Alzheimer's find that things that have not bothered them in years become triggers. Learning these can make it easier to move through the day.
4. Don't be afraid to ask for help!

If you or a loved one may be in need of services, call Council on Aging at 386.253.4700 ext. 225!

June is National Alzheimer's & Brain Health Awareness Month, and we'll be sharing the signs of Alzheimer's, as well as strategies to move forward as a caregiver of a loved with a dementia diagnosis.

What is Alzheimer's Disease? It's defined as progressive brain disorder that leads to memory loss, thinking difficulties, and changes in behavior. It is the most common (but not the only) cause of dementia, affecting primarily older adults.

Some of the earliest signs include memory loss that disrupts daily life, unusual changes in personality, and challenges with communication.

Council on Aging is proud to support older adults and caregivers navigating this major life change. If you or a loved one needs help, please call 386.253.4700 ext. 225. Keep updated on our social media for more tips and tricks to process this major life change.

On May 20, Council on Aging had the privilege of announcing our brand-new initiative, Golden Lifeline: Nourishing our Neighbors at the annual COA Gala. Keep reading to learn more, and stay tuned in June for stories of the incredible seniors being helped by this fund.

At this event, Council on Aging presented the Glenn and Connie Ritchey Community Service Award to the Chanfrau family, honoring their longstanding legacy in our community. We are grateful, not only for their support of our community, but also for their incredible generosity toward Council on Aging and seniors throughout Volusia County.

The Golden Lifeline initiative creates a fund dedicated to helping seniors in severe crisis. Council on Aging receives thousands of calls from seniors in need - from those who haven't eaten in days to those who are impacted by serious natural disasters, COA aims to ensure that no senior in our area is left without help in their time of greatest need.

We are grateful for the support of our community in building this opportunity to help seniors who need us, including the incredible Volusia County Women Who Care members. Golden Lifeline: Nourishing our Neighbors was chosen as the grant recipient at the quarterly meeting earlier this month.

Thanks to our community, Council on Aging has raised over $50,000 for our seniors. This support will ensure that older adults receive a Golden Lifeline when they need it most.
