Groceries are expensive, and many households are feeling the strain. 🥫 When budgets are stretched, programs like SNAP can help.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps eligible individuals and families purchase food, providing important support when making ends meet becomes difficult.

If you or someone you know is struggling to afford groceries, support may be available.
➡️ Apply for SNAP benefits online:

Connecting neighbors to resources like SNAP is one part of addressing hunger. Montgomery County, Ohio, the Montgomery County Food Equity Coalition, and The Foodbank, Inc. are also working together to address the broader barriers that make it difficult for individuals and families to consistently access nutritious, affordable food.

No one should have to choose between paying essential bills and putting food on the table. 🧡

Last week, we hosted our second free agroforestry class led by CSU Extension Professor Denise Natoli-Brooks. Our garden team is learning how to set up and maintain a publicly accessible urban food forest, and all are welcome to learn along with us!

During our last class, we accessed historical satellite data using Google Earth to understand how the land was used and changed over time. We discovered that prior to 2000, there was a building present on our planting site.

Next, we analyzed our soil type using Web Soil Survey, a public government database with information on soil map and data. We learned that we're working with loam, which is a layered combination of sand, silt, and clay. https://websoilsurvey.sc.egov.usda.gov/app/

Finally, we began mapping out our food forest using Overyield, a subscription-based software that suggests viable plants and estimates the cost of regenerative farming projects. https://www.overyield.com/

What kind of fruit or nut trees would you like to see planted in Dayton? Let us know in the comments, and stay tuned for updates on future classes!

It's the first Friday of September, and you know what that means... it's National Food Bank Day! 🧡

Today, we're raising awareness about the essential role food banks play in addressing food insecurity and helping our neighbors access the nutritious food they need.

We're also handing the mic to our team! Hear what inspires them, what they love most about their work, and why serving our community is so rewarding.

It takes a community to fight hunger. 🤝 Learn more about how we're working together at thefoodbankdayton.org.

Cindy spent 22 years as a college counselor, helping students navigate systems and paperwork. When her mother died and her older brother Kevin suddenly needed to live on his own at 69, those skills became a lifeline. She found him an apartment, co-signed utilities, and helped him apply for SNAP. "It takes a lot of courage to fill out social service documents," she says. She had that courage. Kevin is learning to have it too.

Kevin, now 74, has been on SNAP since 2019. At his peak, during COVID, he received over $200 a month. Now he receives about $48 — a drop Cindy suspects was triggered by a small Social Security raise. "I can't quite figure out the source of why it goes down at the same time food goes up," she says.

He stretches every dollar: a pound of meat lasts weeks in the freezer. He gets, Cindy says, "darn right excited about defrosting some soup.”....Kevin's $48 a month barely covers one bag of groceries. "Four bags of food in a month," Cindy says, "is so much better than one."

Cindy volunteers every Friday at the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank, where she has learned what the pantry can and can't do. It can't replace SNAP. "I liken it to shopping in only one aisle of the grocery store," she says. "You can't possibly make a healthy meal if you only go down aisle seven."
