Planning a visit next week? Please note this temporary closure.
The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force will be closed to the public all day Wednesday, Sept. 9, for a scheduled emergency response training exercise.

The closure includes the Museum, Air Force Museum Foundation operations, the National Aviation Hall of Fame, and all visitor attractions and activities on the Museum campus.

The Museum will reopen for normal hours, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 10.
Please plan your visit accordingly, and thank you for your understanding.

On September 3, 1971, the new United States Air Force Museum facility was formally dedicated—the site in Dayton, Ohio that is now the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force™️. ✈️
The Air Force Museum Foundation played a pivotal role in making this facility possible, providing the initial funding and support to bring the new building to life. Today, as the official nonprofit organization of the Museum, we are proud to continue that work by mobilizing philanthropic support to strengthen and expand the Museum’s impact.
By enhancing transformative experiences and connecting global audiences to the legacy, service, and future of aerospace, we ensure this world-class institution can educate, inspire, and connect the world to Air and Space for generations to come.

On Sept. 2, 1945, aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, who had been named Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, formally received the Japanese envoys who signed the surrender document. This marked the official end of World War II.
