this building has a deeper history than most people realize
before what it is now… this space was part of something that helped shape dayton’s manufacturing era
⬇️
Huffman Manufacturing Company of Dayton, Ohio, got its start making sewing machines in the 1880s and bicycles in the 1890s. They had greater success with producing children’s bikes in the 20th century. Fittingly, Huffman’s 1934 Aircrafted cycles were named in tribute to Dayton’s other well-known bicycle builders, Wilbur and Orville Wright.
Horace Huffman Jr. led his family’s company from 1945 until he retired as CEO in 1973. In 1947, he presented the company’s one millionth bicycle ─ which was plated in 14-karat gold ─ to The Henry Ford.
Horace Jr., a dedicated cyclist, founded bicycle clubs and events, and advocated for bike trails around Dayton and his vacation home in northern Michigan. In 1977, his company rebranded itself using Horace’s nickname, “Huffy.”
