Jones Public Library

Jones Public Library Jones Public Library is here largely because of the Dayton Chapter of the Lambda Alpha Sigma Club. Houston Street. Houston Street and S. Cleveland Street.

They held many fund raisers and organized the need for a public library in this city. Originally called Dayton Public Library, a one room facility was opened June 14, 1962 in the Civic Center located off of W. At this time, all books were donated and the library operated by volunteers a few hours on Tuesday and Saturday. Come May 1967, the library extended its days of operation to a few hours five

days a week. Around the year 1985, after more organizing and fundraising, the library had a new building built on the corner of W. After a large contribution to the project, the name of the library was changed to Edmund E. and Nida Smith Jones Library, later shortened to Jones Public Library. In 2010, the new Dayton Community Center/Jones Library building was built.

The Jones Public Library is proud to announce that for the second year in a row, we are a recipient of the Summer at the Library Grant! We received $4,000 that will help us bring our summer programs to life.

We want to extend a dino-sized thank you to the Texas Library Association and H-E-B! Every year, H-E-B works with the Texas Library Association to raise money for the Summer at the Library Grant. This grant provides additional funds to Texas public libraries so that communities across the state have the opportunity to host their summer programs.

It's National Library Week!

Millions of people visit their libraries every weekβ€”and for good reason. During National Library Week, April 19–25, take time to discover what brings you joy at your library. Visit your library and bring friends and family along; encourage a friend to get a library card and discover the opportunities it unlocks; browse the shelves, join a book club, attend a program or storytime, or get started on your next creative project in a makerspace.

National Library Week is filled with opportunities to celebrate our libraries and take action to keep them strong. Join in on one (or all!) of the various commemoration days:

Monday, 4/20: Right to Read Day - we're calling on library lovers and advocates to celebrate wins against censorship efforts and to take action to defend the freedom to read. On Right to Read Day, ALA will release the State of America's Libraries Report, including the list of the Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2025.

Tuesday, 4/21: National Library Workers Day - take time to honor and thank the library workers at your library for all they do to impact your community.

Wednesday, 4/22: National Library Outreach Day - a day to celebrate libraries meeting people where they are. Look for your library out in your community - in the bookmobile, at a local pop-up, at schools or assisted living facilities, or wherever!

Thursday, 4/23: Take Action For Libraries Day - this year, we're asking YOU to show up for our libraries and take action against legislative censorship attempts by contacting Congress.

Stay tuned for posts throughout the week and more ways to get involved, and be sure to visit your library and ilovelibraries.org and celebrate your library.
