The Dawson Police Department was honored to attend the Sumter County Branch NAACP 46th Annual Freedom Fund Gala on June 6, 2026. The evening was a powerful celebration of leadership, service, community, and the individuals whose dedication continues to make a lasting impact across Southwest Georgia.

One of the highlights of the evening was recognizing Chief Sharon Williams, the first African American female Chief of Police in the history of the City of Buena Vista, Georgia. Chief Williams' appointment marks a significant milestone in law enforcement and serves as an inspiration to future generations of public servants.

Chief Williams was also presented with the NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award, a well-deserved honor recognizing her years of dedicated service, leadership, and commitment to improving the lives of those she serves.

The Dawson Police Department proudly congratulates Chief Williams on both her historic achievement and this prestigious recognition. Your dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to public service continue to set an example for others to follow.

As your law enforcement family and band of brothers, we stand with you and look forward to witnessing your continued success and the positive impact you will make in your new role.

Today marks the final graduation of the Chief’s Diploma Program. Due to reduced funding, this impactful program will unfortunately cease operations. While this chapter is coming to a close, it does so by celebrating a remarkable success story.

Today, Ms. Nacondria Dunning became the final City of Dawson recipient and graduate of the Chief’s Diploma Program.

For those who know Nacondria, she needs no introduction. Her journey has not always been easy, and she has faced challenges that could have easily discouraged her from pursuing her goals. That is why learning of this accomplishment made this moment even more special.

Nacondria has chosen a positive path forward. She made the decision to invest in herself, embrace new opportunities, and take control of her future. Rather than becoming another statistic, she has become an example of what determination, perseverance, and personal growth can achieve.

Today, we celebrate not only her graduation but also the courage and commitment it took to reach this milestone. Your parents, your community, and all of us at the Dawson Police Department are incredibly proud of you and all that you have accomplished.

Dawson, let us come together and recognize this outstanding young lady. Let us continue to encourage, support, and uplift her as she continues along this path of empowerment and success.
