The City of Davis welcomes youth to join the Junior Basketball league, returning for the 2027 season. This program offers Davis youth an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of basketball, practice as a team, compete in low-stakes games and have fun. Each player will also receive a City of Davis basketball jersey.

Registration for Junior Basketball opens on Sept. 9 at 7 a.m., and closes Oct. 9 at 5 p.m. The enrollment fee is $176 per player. Space on team rosters is limited, and waitlists are limited to five participants. To register, click on the “Recreation Online” button at cityofdavis.org or call the registration desk at 530-757-5626. Following confirmed enrollment, families will be contacted about practices by Jan. 12.

The Junior Basketball league is open to youth in third/fourth grade and fifth/sixth grade divisions. Teams practice twice a week on either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday at local schools or neighborhood parks between 3 – 6 p.m. with Wednesday practices beginning as early as 1:30 p.m. Enrollment is available by grade, school and practice days.

Practices begin the week of Jan. 18 with the first weekend of games on Saturday, Jan. 24. Games are held on Saturdays at the Davis Senior High School gyms between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The final day of games is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 27.

The City of Davis is also seeking passionate, positive, committed, friendly and energetic role models to coach the Junior Basketball program. Repairs to the Amtrak Station building, located at 840 2nd Street in Davis, will begin Monday, September 14, and continue through November. Construction will generally take place Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents and Amtrak passengers may experience increased noise and dust while work is underway.

Equipment and materials will begin arriving the week of September 7 and will be staged near the work area and in select locations that are still being determined. A few parking spaces and one pedestrian walkway will be temporarily closed during the project. Most parking and pedestrian routes will remain open, and passengers will continue to have access to and around the station throughout construction.

Each year, the City of Davis Police Accountability Commission organizes a community outreach meeting on a local law enforcement topic.

Please join the community for “Working Together to Protect Our Neighbors,” an event that will explore the local law enforcement response to immigration issues on Thursday, Sept. 10, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Center (203 E. 14th Street).

We have three expert speakers for this event:
•Michael Gennaco, The OIR Group, City of Davis Independent Police Auditor, will speak about the legal boundaries and accountability expectations governing local law enforcement when federal immigration enforcement occurs in or near our community
•Todd Henry, City of Davis Police Chief, will speak about what the Davis Police can and cannot do in cases of federal immigration enforcement in Davis. Chief Henry will speak about Davis Police responsibilities, limits, decision-making procedures, documentation and commitments to community safety and trust.
•Ann Block, Senior Staff Attorney with the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, will focus on practical family preparedness.

Simultaneous translation services will be available for the meeting.
