This past weekend, our career and volunteer crews took to the drill ground to sharpen our response tactics for vehicle fires, including the unique hazards that come with today’s alternative fuel vehicles. 🚗⚡️

Using a live-burn propane car prop, firefighters practiced fast-attack hose lines, precise fire suppression, and crucial post-incident PPE decontamination to keep our team healthy and ready for the next call.

Continuous training ensures we’re always prepared to protect you, no matter what’s driving on our roads.

West Plainfield Fire Department and Winters Fire Department were dispatched to the area of Russell Blvd & County Road 92F following reports of flames visible behind trees along Putah Creek.

Upon arrival, crews observed a large flame in the distance and immediately deployed our Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). Live video feed and automated vehicle location (AVL) from the drone allowed ground units to quickly locate the source and confirm it was a planned, safe natural gas well burn-off operation being managed by a pipeline operator.

Utilizing our UAS program allowed us to rapidly assess the situation, verify safety, and direct appropriate resources while keeping our primary engines and personnel in service and ready for other calls.

West Plainfield crews participated in low-angle rope rescue training today, practicing technical rigging and victim extrication down a steep embankment. From securing vehicle anchors and rigging mechanical advantage haul systems to packaging the patient into the Stokes basket and navigating rough terrain, drills like this ensure our team remains sharp, coordinated, and ready.

Stevensons Bridge (Graffiti Bridge) is scheduled to close on May 1st through October. Local access to properties and businesses within the closure areas will be maintained throughout construction, but you will not be able to cross the bridge between Yolo/Solano county.

Stevenson Bridge Rehabilitation Project to Begin in May

Solano County, in partnership with Yolo County, is moving forward with the rehabilitation of the historic Stevenson Bridge, a 298-foot, multi-span arch bridge spanning Putah Creek between the two counties. While both counties are served by the bridge, Solano County was originally established as the agency responsible for its maintenance. Yolo County contributes to half of the ongoing maintenance costs for the structure.

At more than 100 years old, Stevenson Bridge is designated as a historical landmark and serves as a critical transportation link connecting Solano and Yolo counties. According to California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the bridge “is a rare example of a reinforced concrete through tied arch in California and is the oldest bridge of this type in California and possibly the United States.” Often referred to locally as “Graffiti Bridge,” it is the only remaining concrete double arch span bridge of its kind from its era.
