Flamingo Gardens

Flamingo Gardens Established in 1927, Flamingo Gardens is one of the oldest botanical gardens in South Florida.
(2116)

Spend the day in this 60 acre botanical garden and Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary, with rescued native wildlife, some of South Florida's oldest and last remaining jungle forest, the Wray Home Museum, and 22 FL Champion Trees- the largest of their species. The 60-acre not-for-profit botanical garden contains over 3,000 tropical and sub-tropical species of plants and trees and its Everglades Wildlife

Sanctuary is home to the largest collection of Florida native wildlife in the state. With some of the last natural jungle growth in South Florida, the Wray Botanical Collection at Flamingo Gardens includes 21 of the largest trees of their species and a unique hammock of 200-year-old Live Oak trees. The Historic Wray Home has been restored and is now a museum which provides a glimpse of life in the 1930s. The Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary gives residence to permanently injured and non-releasable wildlife and is home to 83 species of Florida native birds and animals including alligators, panthers, bobcats, otters, eagles, peacocks, and of course flamingos. The half-acre Free-flight Aviary boasts over 250 birds representing 45 species. In the last 20 years birds in the Aviary have produced over 2,000 offspring which have been released into the wild.

to Spring 1991, when Flamingo Gardens was featured on the cover of Broward County Cultural Affairs Council's Cultural Quarterly magazine.
The cover encouraged readers to "Set Your Sights West," and inside, the article showcased many of Flamingo Gardens' attractions, including the Aviary, flamingo pond, bird of prey exhibit, and the Cluster Fig Champion tree. It also highlighted the recently inaugurated River Otter exhibit, the Tropical Plant House, which opened in September 1990, and the wood bridge pond, completed in 1991.

The article also looked ahead to the renovation of the Wray Home Everglades Museum, now known as the Wray Home Museum.

More than three decades later, many of these beloved attractions continue to welcome guests and connect them with the beauty, wildlife, and history of South Florida.

Supporting wildlife starts closer to home than you might think.

As natural habitats continue to shrink and become fragmented, native plants play an increasingly important role in helping wildlife survive and thrive. They provide essential food, shelter, and nesting sites for countless species throughout the year.

From caterpillars feeding on native host plants to songbirds relying on native seeds and berries, every native garden can become part of a larger conservation network. Even small spaces can make a meaningful difference.

By choosing native plants, you're not just creating a beautiful landscape—you're helping build a sanctuary for South Florida's wildlife.

What native plants are growing in your garden? Share your favorites in the comments! 🌱🦋🐦

🌳

This week, make a difference by leaving one place better than you found it.

Pick up litter during a walk, help a neighbor with their garden, volunteer in your community, or simply share your love of nature with someone new.

Stewardship begins with small acts of care—and those acts inspire others to do the same.

Together, we can create a brighter future for South Florida's natural and cultural treasures.
