Sometimes what looks like road construction is actually work happening deep underground.

Crews working on Locust Street between Marlo and Pineacre are replacing two failing storm sewer structures that drain water off the road when it rains. One of the structures sits nearly 20 feet below ground, which requires a major excavation to safely complete the work.

The good news is that the contractor currently expects to reopen one lane in each direction late next week. Full reopening will likely follow about a week later once the underground repairs are complete and the roadway is rebuilt. We’ll keep you posted!

Eastbound Rockingham Road will be closed starting June 8 for road improvements to another section of Rockingham Road. The project will resurface Rockingham Road between the Highway 61 interchange and Fairmount Street. It is supported in part by a $779,198 grant awarded to help establish a permanent flood detour when river levels impact West River Drive.

Drivers should follow the signed detour using River Dr to South Concord St or seek an alternate route. This phase is estimated to be completed in late July or early August and will be followed by work on the westbound lanes.

The entire project is expected to be completed in September or October.

Meanwhile, improvements on Rockingham Road between Farragut and Elmwood remain on track to wrap up in early July.

🤔 Why was only one section of the road repaired?

Good question! If a road repair is bigger than a pothole, but smaller than reconstructing the full road, we do what is called full depth patching. Watch as Mike from our Street Heavy Maintence crew breaks down what full depth patching is and why we do it.

Follow the H! We’ve added some new signage to help drivers navigate around the Eastern Ave. bridge closure to get to the MercyOne Genesis Davenport campus. Google Maps and Waze are also updated to offer a detour around the bridge. Bridge work is expected to wrap up in November.

As a reminder, we’re reconstructing the bridge using a $2 million federal grant. The new bridge will be about 3 feet higher to defend against flash flooding and to create an underpass for the Duck Creek Recreational Trail.

Pine Street will be closed between 49th and 53rd Streets this Thursday, June 4, so crews can finish installing the remaining concrete. Starting Monday, June 8, the area will reopen to one southbound lane while work continues on driveways and boulevards. The project is moving along as planned and is expected to wrap up in late June or early July.

Storm drains are for rain, not garbage or chemicals. Trash travels. Anything that enters a storm drain flows straight to our local creeks and rivers - and eventually the ocean - without being filtered or cleaned. Let’s work together to keep pollutants out of our waterways.
• Properly dispose of trash
• Pick up litter
• Reduce fertilizers and pesticides (or try natural options like compost)
