Waste Commission of Scott County Scott Area Landfill • Scott Area Recycling Center • Hazardous Materials • Electronics Recovery Center • iLivehere

Waste Commission of Scott County is a 28E, inter-governmental agency that was established in 1972 and reorganized in 1990. Our members include 17 communities and Scott County. The Commission, headquartered in Buffalo, Iowa, has planned, sited, built and operates:

Scott Area Landfill, a synthetically lined Subtitle D landfill that includes leachate collection, recirculation and methane recovery. Scott Area Recycling Center, which serves as the sorting and processing facility for all residential recyclables collected in Scott County. Household Hazardous Material Facilities, which serve residents in both Scott County, Iowa and Rock Island County, Illinois on an appointment basis. It also serves businesses that generate a limited amount of hazardous material. Electronics Recovery Center, the first public facility of its kind in Iowa, demanufactures, processes and recycles electronic waste (e-waste) such as computers and televisions from residents and businesses in eastern Iowa and western Illinois. iLivehere: myhome ourcommunity® is an environmental outreach program that provides public education to teach students, residents and businesses in the greater Quad-City area about solid waste and recycling-related issues. These programs are solely supported by tipping fees, the fees charged for materials brought to our facilities.

What's something we get asked about regularly? Wood!

Wood has a few different disposal options:
1. If possible, reuse
2. Toss small pieces in garbage
3. Bring to the Scott Area Landfill (for a fee)
BUT, if you have clean pallets and kiln-dried (non-green treated) dimensional lumber & crating, keep them separate from the rest of your load. Then tell the landfill scale operator that your load includes clean wood. She'll provide instructions to the wood recycling area.

You have the power to prevent battery fires in collection trucks, landfills, and recycling centers!

Stop preventable fires by disposing of batteries at our Electronics Recovery Center or one of our Household Battery Drop-Offs located near the recycling drop-offs at Carey Ave, West Lake Park, and Scott County Park!

Please note: Damaged batteries, data-containing devices, and vehicle batteries are not accepted in the drop boxes and need to be disposed of at the Electronics Recovery Center.

This service is FREE for residents of Scott and Rock Island Counties.

Recycle Right by avoiding wish-cycling!

Plastic bags, garden hoses, hangers, and string lights get tangled in our sorting system and should be thrown in the garbage or in the case of plastic bags, recycled at a retailer. Straws and plastic utensils are too small to be sorted and made of low-quality material that can't be recycled. We'll accept string lights all year long at the Electronics Recovery Center. Stryofoam, pet food bags, and other items that are a mix of materials aren't recyclable via our program. We don't know of any local styrofoam recyclers, so we suggest reuse or throwing it in the garbage. Some pet stores recycle pet food bags, but remember, when in doubt, throw it out!
