Remembering Rev. Francis E. Grogan

The Rev. Francis E. Grogan(Fr. Frank), 76, was the head of the Holy Cross Residence in Dartmouth, he was on United Airlines Flight 175..

United Airlines Flight 175, the second plane to hit the World Trade Center in New York City. His plane, which carried 65 people, hit the South Tower at 9:03 a.m. Father Grogan was traveling to see his sister, Anne Browne in California and was in between ministries. He was director of the Holy Cross Residence in Dartmouth and had just accepted a post as chaplain of St. Joseph's a retirement home for Holy Cross Brothers(St. Joseph's Center) in New York when he decided to visit his sister in California before he began his new position in the fall. Father Grogan was scheduled to take a Delta Airlines flight from Boston on Sept. 11 when a friend offered him a first-class seat on United Flight 175 instead. Neither his sister nor the Holy Cross religious brothers knew about the change, so it was only when he failed to call during a scheduled layover in Chicago that his sister began to worry.

At 9:03 a.m., Flight 175 had crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.

He was not the kind of priest who lived to unravel theological contradictions or who sought power. He disliked confrontation and tried to take the charitable view, said the Rev. J. Robert Rioux, who met him when both were studying for the priesthood in North Easton, Mass., and remained his friend for the next 50 years. "His approach to life was, 'Don't sweat the small stuff,' " he said. "You could witness this tendency in his clothes." More than once, he showed up for chapel in his bedroom slippers. A student of Fr. Grogan is noted as saying, "Father Frank found the commandments to be to "wordy"....."Just be nice in life"....

Remembering Leah Elizabeth Oliver

Leah Elizabeth Oliver was a 24-year-old Dartmouth native who tragically lost her life in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, exactly one day before her 25th birthday.

Leah was a Dartmouth High School graduate of the class of 1994, she was involved in her community, playing field hockey, softball, and basketball, while also serving in the student government. She eventually moved to Brooklyn, New York, to pursue her career. She was known for her ambition and dedication.

At the time of the attacks, Leah had been working for about two months as a technical sales consultant in the risk management software division of Marsh & McLennan. Her office was located on the 96th floor of the World Trade Center's North Tower. Known for her ambition and dedication, she arrived early to her desk on the morning of September 11. At 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower, with the direct impact zone encompassing her floor and leaving no means of escape.

Leah is remembered by her parents, Walter Oliver and Elizabeth Rego, alongside her friends and extended family, for her infectious smile, easygoing nature, and bright future. Her father beautifully memorialized her by sharing a recurring inside joke they had, where he would call her his "favorite daughter," and she would remind him that she was his only daughter—leaving her forever "frozen in time one day before her 25th birthday."

When Leah was not working, she loved to jog, especially across the Brooklyn Bridge near her home in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. Ms. Oliver also loved to spend time with her family. She would often accompany her father on Sunday morning rides on the back of his motorcycle. The pair would be linked through an intercom system and talk as they rode through the hills and highways of northern New Jersey.

"She was a terrific passenger," her father was quoted as saying.

The crew of the Mayflower II Fuller Shallop, led by Capt. Whit Perry, docked at the Warren G. Hathaway Marina on their historic voyage through the South Coast and Islands, retracing some of the blockade running routes taken by Paul Cuffe during the Revolutionary War.

Visitors enjoyed seeing the shallop up close and meeting the ship's captain and crew, music from the Dartmouth Community Band, learning more from the various historical societies present, and a screening of Paul Cuffe Story with the film's creator and lead actor.

August is Overdose Awareness Month.

The Town of Dartmouth's Substance Use Program Coordinator has produced an important public service announcement on recognizing and responding to an opioid overdose.

The video explains the warning signs of an overdose, how to properly administer Narcan (naloxone) nasal spray, and the critical steps to take while waiting for emergency responders to arrive. It also highlights that Narcan is available over the counter and can help save a life in the event of an opioid emergency.

Knowledge can make a difference. We encourage everyone to take a few minutes to watch this important PSA and learn how to respond in an emergency.
