A Message from Sheriff Susanna Johnson:
As I reflect on my first year serving as your sheriff, I am proud of the strong partnerships we have built with local schools, community organizations, businesses, and public safety agencies. These relationships have been essential to our shared success and to keeping our communities safe.
Our staff has worked tirelessly to address public safety concerns with professionalism, compassion, and a commitment to honorable service. Together, we have made significant strides and laid a strong foundation for the future of the Sheriff’s Office.
One of the most significant accomplishments this year was earning law enforcement accreditation from the Washington State Sheriffs and Police Chiefs Association (WASPC). With our jail already accredited, this achievement reflects our commitment to the highest standards of service, accountability and excellence.
In 2024, we established four strategic goals that shaped our direction and priorities throughout the year:
1. Public Safety – Professional service that holds people accountable through quality investigations and tactics that keep us and our communities safer.
2. Employee Investment Initiative – Professionally and personally invest and support all staff for better work-life balance, career enrichment, and overall health.
3. Trust & Transparency – Effective policing requires support from our community that is built from the integrity of our words and actions.
4. Organizational Resiliency – Deliberate planning to strengthen leadership, our foundational structure, and foster partnerships to better respond and adapt to change.
In alignment with these goals, our leadership remained focused on delivering quality over quantity, emphasizing professional service and safe, effective operational tactics. We strengthened our partnership with Snohomish County Human Services to provide alternative resources for individuals facing addiction. With a balanced approach, we worked to hold offenders accountable while building trust with residents, business owners, and neighborhood organizations.
In the fall, we launched an external dashboard that gives the public a firsthand look at our Office of Professional Accountability data . We also expanded the Snohomish County Jail data dashboard, providing the public valuable insight into those booked into the facility, including data on drug trends and the prevalence of fentanyl use among those entering the facility.
This year, we also developed new Mission and Vision statements that reflect our core purpose and built a foundation for our office and leaders to follow each day.
- Our Mission is to serve and safeguard all communities of Snohomish County.
- Our Vision is to provide exceptional public safety through innovative and proactive services that enhance prosperity, wellness, and security for all.
These guiding principles, along with our motto, “Honor in Service," define who we are and the direction we are committed to as we move forward. I am proud of our staff for their dedication to our mission and their commitment to serving others with courtesy and compassion.
Looking ahead, we remain focused on key priorities: supporting all crime victims, advancing child advocacy efforts, enhancing regional drug enforcement, apprehending violent offenders, and strengthening our recruitment and retention strategies. I am particularly committed to continue working with youth-focused organizations to address the critical issues of youth violence and behavioral health in our county.
Together, we are building a safer, stronger, and more connected Snohomish County. Thank you for your continued trust, support, and partnership.
