📚 New Year, New Missions... and New Books?
How many of you have a goal to do more reading in 2026? 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️
Whether you’re looking to sharpen your leadership skills, revisit history, or just get lost in a great story, we’ve put together a "Must-Read" list for our American Legion family.
We’ve highlighted books written by fellow veterans and some of the most talked-about military titles hitting the shelves this year:
🎖️ VETERAN VOICES: Memoirs & Transitions
• "Grit to Glory" by Darrell Utt (Ret. Green Beret): A raw, honest account of leadership and brotherhood. No fluff, just the reality of life in Special Forces.
• "South, Toward Home" by Porter Briggs (US Army Veteran): A brand new 2026 release. It’s a powerful look at the transition from the uniform back to civilian life—a story many of us know well.
📜 HISTORY & STRATEGY
• "Patton’s Prayer" by Alex Kershaw: The true story of Patton’s famous prayer for weather during the Battle of the Bulge. It’s a great testament to faith and grit under pressure.
• "Gettysburg" by Adam I.P. Smith: This is being called the definitive Civil War book for 2026. A fresh look at the ground our ancestors fought on.
🌲 THE TIMELESS CLASSIC
• "With the Old Breed" by E.B. Sledge: There’s a reason this WWII classic is back on the "Must-Read" lists this year. It remains one of the most authentic accounts of combat ever written.
🚀 MILITARY FICTION (New for Jan '26!)
• "Blood Meteor" by J.N. Chaney & Terry Maggert: For the sci-fi fans! This brand-new release takes Marine Corps values and drops them into a high-stakes future.

As we gather around the table today, we’re especially grateful for our veterans, our active-duty service members, and the families who stand beside them. 🇺🇸🦃

If you have a loved one home on leave this Thanksgiving, remember:
they’ve traveled a long way, juggled tight schedules, and often spent a lot of money just to be here. It can be exhausting trying to visit everyone.

This year, consider being the one to go see them — swing by for a quick hug, share a plate of leftovers, or simply sit and catch up. Those small moments of support mean more than you know. ❤️

From all of us at the Darlington American Legion Post 214:
Happy Thanksgiving, and thank you to all who have served, are serving, and love someone who serves. 🇺🇸

🇺🇸 To All Who Have Served 🇺🇸

Our American Legion family is grateful for every veteran, service member, and military family in our community. Your sacrifice and quiet strength are the reason we do what we do.

If you are a veteran (or love one), you are welcome here. You don’t have to “be more involved” or volunteer a certain number of hours to belong — just come as you are.

👉 Need information about membership or programs? Send us a message or stop by.

Thank you for your service, your stories, and your continued presence in our town. 🇺🇸

County Government Day ✅

Our local junior students took part in County Government Day, an American Legion program that gives young people a behind-the-scenes look at how their county actually runs. 🇺🇸

The day started at the County Courthouse with a powerful mock trial about a teenager who was distracted by their phone, crossed the center line, and caused a crash that killed a passenger in another car. It was a hard but important reminder of how one choice can change many lives.

After the trial, students visited different county agencies, where department heads explained what they do and how they serve our community. One of the biggest highlights every year is the tour of the County Jail — that definitely leaves an impression on them.

We wrapped up the morning with lunch at the Legion Post, followed by:
• The head of County HR, sharing how their department hires and supports county employees
• The head of the Aging & Disability Resource Center, explaining how they help some of our most vulnerable residents
• A representative from Southwest Tech, talking about education and career pathways
• An Army Recruiter, discussing opportunities for military service

Thank you to all the county departments, Southwest Tech, the Army recruiter, our Legion members, and especially the students for taking the time to learn how their local government works. These are our future leaders in action. 👏🇺🇸

🇺🇸 Honoring All Who Served 🇺🇸

Today, we pause to honor the brave men and women who have worn our nation’s uniform — those who stood ready to defend freedom, serve their communities, and uphold the values we hold dear.

At American Legion Post 214 in Darlington, we extend our deepest gratitude to every veteran, past and present. Your courage, sacrifice, and continued service remind us that freedom is never free.

Let us remember to thank a veteran today — and every day — for the strength, resilience, and heart they bring to our country and our hometown.

To all who served — thank you. ❤️🤍💙
