This week, we would like to recognize all of the individuals inducted into the 2026 Class of the Darlington County School District Hall of Fame!
Former S.C. Governor David Muldrow Beasley is a 1975 graduate of Lamar High School and one of Darlington County School District’s most recognized graduates.
Long before he served as governor or led one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations, his foundation was built here, through the teachers, coaches and community members who helped shape his character, work ethic and commitment to service.
Governor Beasley’s public service began early.
At just 20 years old, he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives.
He served there from 1979 to 1992 and rose quickly into leadership, becoming the youngest Speaker pro tempore and Majority Leader in the nation.
In 1994, he was elected Governor of South Carolina. He served as the state’s 83rd governor from 1995 to 1999.
As governor, he focused on economic development, ethics reform, welfare-to-work efforts and education improvements. He became known for taking principled positions and leading with conviction, even when the path was not easy.
After leaving the governor’s office, Governor Beasley continued his work in public service, peacebuilding and international outreach.
In 2017, he was appointed Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme, the world’s largest humanitarian organization fighting hunger and food insecurity.
Under his leadership, the World Food Programme responded to some of the world’s most serious crises, including famine, natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The work required compassion, urgency and the ability to bring people together across nations, cultures and political lines.
In 2020, during Governor Beasley’s leadership, the World Food Programme received the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to combat hunger, support peace in conflict-affected areas and prevent hunger from being used as a weapon of war.
Governor Beasley’s journey began here in Darlington County schools. From Lamar High School to the Governor’s Mansion and from South Carolina to the world stage, his life reminds us that one person, grounded in service and willing to lead with courage, can make a difference far beyond what we may imagine.
That is the power of each. The power of each teacher who encourages a student. The power of each community that shapes a young life. The power of each graduate who carries those lessons into the world.
