đ âCommunity Action raised me.â đ
Those words, spoken with pride and gratitude by Shaqueeda Douglas, capture the power of longâterm, relationshipâbased supportâand the resilience of one incredible woman.
Shaqueeda first connected with Community Action, Inc. at just 16 years old. Now 35, her journey spans nearly two decades and includes moments of hardship, perseverance, growth, and hope.
Born while her mother was incarcerated and raised largely in foster care, Shaqueeda learned early what it meant to survive. Through it all, her grandmother remained her greatest source of strength and encouragementâshaping the values that continue to guide Shaqueeda today.
As a young adult, Shaqueeda faced homelessness and found safety and support at Community Actionâs Twin Oaks Shelter for the Homeless. Later, as a single mother of four, she navigated housing instability, incarceration, and significant barriers to stability. At every stage, Community Action remained presentâoffering not just programs, but people who listened, believed in her, and never gave up.
From graduating the Beloit Fresh Start Program, to completing Project Thrive with perfect attendance, to securing employment and planning her return to school to become a Certified Nursing Assistant, Shaqueedaâs story is one of persistence and possibility. Even during setbacks, Community Action staff answered her calls, supported her children, and walked alongside her without judgment.
Today, Shaqueeda is working, writing childrenâs books inspired by her kids, and dreaming big about giving backâthrough youth groups, affirmation cards, and continued work in the nonprofit community.
âThey have the resourcesâand if they donât, they help you find them. They never give up on you,â Shaqueeda says.
Her journey reminds us that progress isnât always linearâbut dignity, flexibility, and strong relationships can change lives.
