💙 “Community Action raised me.” 💙

Those words, spoken with pride and gratitude by Shaqueeda Douglas, capture the power of long‑term, relationship‑based support—and the resilience of one incredible woman.

Shaqueeda first connected with Community Action, Inc. at just 16 years old. Now 35, her journey spans nearly two decades and includes moments of hardship, perseverance, growth, and hope.

Born while her mother was incarcerated and raised largely in foster care, Shaqueeda learned early what it meant to survive. Through it all, her grandmother remained her greatest source of strength and encouragement—shaping the values that continue to guide Shaqueeda today.

As a young adult, Shaqueeda faced homelessness and found safety and support at Community Action’s Twin Oaks Shelter for the Homeless. Later, as a single mother of four, she navigated housing instability, incarceration, and significant barriers to stability. At every stage, Community Action remained present—offering not just programs, but people who listened, believed in her, and never gave up.

From graduating the Beloit Fresh Start Program, to completing Project Thrive with perfect attendance, to securing employment and planning her return to school to become a Certified Nursing Assistant, Shaqueeda’s story is one of persistence and possibility. Even during setbacks, Community Action staff answered her calls, supported her children, and walked alongside her without judgment.

Today, Shaqueeda is working, writing children’s books inspired by her kids, and dreaming big about giving back—through youth groups, affirmation cards, and continued work in the nonprofit community.

“They have the resources—and if they don’t, they help you find them. They never give up on you,” Shaqueeda says.

Her journey reminds us that progress isn’t always linear—but dignity, flexibility, and strong relationships can change lives.

A huge thank you to the Lakes Area REALTORS® Association for inviting Twin Oaks staff to their recent gathering last Thursday. It was a wonderful opportunity to share more about Twin Oaks and our mission, and we are incredibly grateful for the chance to host a 50/50 raffle—especially when the winner generously donated their winnings back to our shelter. We truly appreciate this partnership and are thankful to be included and supported by such a caring community.

We are incredibly grateful to The Timothy Project workgroup, who came out last Saturday to generously donate their time and talents by re‑staining the Twin Oaks Shelter boardwalk. 🌿

Their hard work helps keep our space safe, welcoming, and well cared for the individuals and families we serve. Thank you for being such a strong community partner and for showing what service in action looks like.

🌟 Volunteer Shout-Out! 🌟

We want to send a huge THANK YOU to Southern Lakes Church of Elkhorn and their Community Impact Team for spending their Show Love Weekend at TOS! 💙

This incredible group went above and beyond—exceeding all expectations. Not only did they completely empty the shed, they also swept and cleaned the space, carefully sorted items, and thoughtfully reorganized everything that stayed.

On top of that, they unexpectedly took the extra step of hauling away items we no longer needed—ensuring donations, recycling, and landfill items all went to the appropriate places. Their hard work, attention to detail, and servant hearts made a lasting impact on our team and our community.

Thank you for showing what it truly means to Show Love through action. We are so grateful for community partners like you who help make our work possible! 🙌

Did You Know?

In 2025, Twin Oaks Shelter for the Homeless provided vital, life‑changing services to 251 individuals—including 124 children and 127 adults across 92 households. Behind each number is a story of resilience, a family seeking stability, and a community stepping in when it matters most.

This past year, Twin Oaks supported:

• 2 veterans who bravely served our country and needed a safe place to rebuild.

• 17 individuals experiencing chronic homelessness, each facing long-term barriers that require dedicated care and compassion.

• 14 survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, stalking, or human trafficking within the last year, each seeking safety, dignity, and support during some of the most traumatic moments of their lives.

These aren’t just statistics. They are our neighbors, our coworkers, our community members. And they found hope because Twin Oaks was there.

Thanks to the continuous support of our community—and individuals like you—we are able to keep our shelter doors open, provide a safe and stable environment, and walk alongside those experiencing crisis. Your generosity makes this work possible.

But the need continues to grow, and so does the urgency.

If you believe in the importance of safe shelter, in second chances, and in standing with those who need us most, we invite you to take action.

Volunteer. Donate. Make an impact today.

Your support helps ensure that every person who walks through our doors is met with safety, compassion, and hope.
