Advocate in Action is presented to someone in the community who works tirelessly to make their community a better place. They are advocates for all, connecting people, organizations, and groups with HKUW to further our mission of mobilizing individuals to give, advocate, and volunteer—creating opportunities for a good life for everyone.
This year’s recipient is not just one person but two individuals. Lynn & Rhonda Gibson, have dedicated themselves to serving the homeless in Garrard County in ways that are truly remarkable. From helping form the Garrard County Homeless Coalition Inc., to raising funds for a homeless shelter, to managing the day-to-day operations, there is virtually nothing they haven’t done to support others in need and move them from homelessness to thriving.
They have built strong community partnerships with local businesses to provide jobs for shelter residents, even arranging transportation to ensure residents can get to work. They also guide residents in setting aside money from their employment, helping them take steps toward living independently.
Through it all, the Gibsons have maintained a calm and reassuring presence, trusting that God will take care of the details while they continue to serve with heart, dedication, and unwavering faith.

The community builder award this year has been renamed to the Funkhouser Community Builder Award in honor of and to recognize John Funkhouser for all of his energy, time, effort, sponsorship, and dedication he has given to our communities.

This award is presented to an individual who works tirelessly to improve not just their own community, but all of our communities. They excel at making connections, inspiring others, and uniting people for the common good.
This person gives freely of their time and talent, serving as a passionate liaison who constantly seeks ways to involve groups and individuals in meaningful work. They are always among the first to lend a hand, organize volunteers, and step up to serve our communities.
Just like John, this individual goes above and beyond to make a lasting difference in the lives of those around them.
And this year, the recipient of the Funkhouser Community Builder Award is Brice Gibson.

Brice is the Boyle County Health Department Harm Reduction and Homeless Coordinator. (The Bridge Recovery Community Center). He is boots on the ground and is out amongst those living without shelter. Brice coordinates supplies and food, and brings together organizations to help solve this ongoing crisis. He serves as the central hub for all those who are homeless and in need.

The Spirit of Collaboration Award recognizes a group that understands lasting change happens when people come together with a shared purpose.
In just one year, this organization has turned vision into action. What began as a small group of passionate individuals has quickly grown into a nonprofit making remarkable strides and taking meaningful steps toward addressing the needs of the homeless in our community. Their work is not only meeting an urgent need but also laying the foundation for long-term solutions.
This year’s recipient of the Spirit of Collaboration Award goes to the Boyle County Homeless . They are proof that even in a short time, when people unite around a common goal, extraordinary things can happen.

HKUW Partner in Action Award- This award is presented to a partner who not only recognizes the needs within our community but also brings people together to create meaningful solutions.
This individual consistently goes above and beyond to serve some of our most vulnerable neighbors. A true advocate, they are never content with the status quo—continually assessing needs, seeking better ways to respond, and working tirelessly to be part of the solution.
The recipient of the HKUW Partner in Action Award for 2026 is Cliff Dunne. Through his work with individuals experiencing homelessness, he serves meals, connects people with critical resources, and plays an active role in supporting Amen Corner at St. Peter and Paul Church—offering both compassion and hope to those who need it most.

HKUW CHANGE MAKER AWARD, is presented to an individual who goes above and beyond to lift up those who are most in need in our community—someone who doesn’t just see challenges, but steps in to be part of the solution.

Through both his career and his personal time, he works tirelessly to help people at some of the lowest points in their lives. When others may see obstacles, he sees people—people worthy of dignity, hope, and a second chance. He is known for offering not just assistance, but a true hand up—encouraging, secure housing, and believing in a better path forward.
Time and time again, when someone is in crisis, this person is there—showing up with compassion, encouragement, and a determination to make a difference. His impact reaches far beyond a single moment; it changes lives.

We are incredibly grateful for his service, his heart, and his unwavering commitment to our community.
Sgt. Rainwater, you are truly appreciated.

We had the honor of celebrating a Mercer County Habitat For Humanity home dedication and the beginning of a new chapter for a deserving family. ❤️

To help create a space where learning and imagination can flourish, HKUW provided books and bookcases for the children in the home. We believe every child deserves access to books, opportunities to learn, and a place to dream big.

Congratulations to the Martin family on their new home, and thank you to all who helped make this day possible. Together, we’re building stronger futures—one home and one story at a time. 📚🏡
