NEWS RELEASE: Police Department Announces Warden Promotion

After a nationwide search was conducted with applicants from as far away as Washington State, Pennsylvania, and Mississippi, the Danville Police Department is pleased to announce the promotion of Paul Totten to the position of Warden of the City of Danville Adult Detention Center (ADC). Warden Totten was pinned with his new badge during a ceremony on Monday, September 14, at 1 Community Way. Bringing 27 years of correctional and detention management experience, Warden Totten most recently served as a Correctional Captain at the Adult Detention Center.

Effective September 16, Warden Totten assumes leadership of the Adult Detention Center.

“For the selection process, we identified several qualities that were important in the next warden. We wanted someone who would lead from the front and set a strong example. It is important that the new warden understand modern corrections and recognized the importance of best practice and be innovative and comfortable with technology. The best candidate would effectively lead, develop, and ensure accountability for ADC’s standards and policies and while also being open to evaluating existing practices and making improvements when necessary,” said Danville Police Chief Chris Wiles.

Warden Totten will oversee all detention operations and continue to promote a safe, secure, and professionally managed facility for both staff and inmates.

"I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve as Warden of the City of Danville Adult Detention Center. I am grateful for the mentors, colleagues, and staff who have supported me throughout my career. I look forward to building upon our tradition of professionalism, accountability, and service while continuing to ensure the safety and security of our facility, staff, inmates, and community," said Warden Totten.

9/14/26 UPDATE: SUSPECT WANTED IN ONGOING SHOOTING INVESTIGATION OF 1-YEAR-OLD

The Danville Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance locating K-Sean La’Darius Royster, 24, of Danville. Royster is wanted for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in relation to the incident that resulted in a one-year-old child being shot at Purdum Woods Monday, Sept. 7.

The one-year-old who was injured in the shooting was released from the hospital on Sept. 8 and is recovering.

This investigation remains active and ongoing.

9/7/26 ORIGINAL NEWS RELEASE: Danville Police Investigating Shooting Incident

On Monday, Sept. 7, 2026, at approximately 1:23 a.m., the Danville Police Department responded to a 911 call for multiple shots fired and a 1-year-old child being struck at the G building of the Purdum Woods apartment complex located at 1575 Richmond Boulevard.

Once on scene, officers located a 1-year-old female child suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower body. Officers and first responders provided immediate medical attention before the child was airlifted to a trauma facility for treatment, where she is currently listed in stable condition.

The investigation found that at approximately 1:21 AM, multiple individuals shot toward a group standing in the breezeway area of the G building, in what appeared to be a targeted attack. Gunfire was returned from the G building breezeway area as well. The 1-year-old victim was being held by her mother at the time of the shooting and was struck while standing in the G building breezeway. The suspects fled on foot from the scene. Two apartments within the G building were struck by gunfire during this incident.

This is an active and ongoing investigation. The Danville Police Department asks anyone with information or surveillance cameras in the area, especially areas between Purdum Road, Bradley Rd, and side streets leading back toward North Main Street to contact the Danville Police Department by either calling 911, patrol at 434-799-6510 option 4, investigations at 434-799-6508 option 3, and option 1 again, contacting Crime Stoppers at 434-793-0000, approach any officer you see, through social media, via email [email protected], or use our crime tips app CARE at www.p3tips.com/tipform.aspx?ID=818 #.

Today, the Danville Police Department pauses to reflect and remember the lives lost during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Twenty-five years later, we continue to honor the victims, the first responders, and the countless acts of courage displayed that day in New York, at the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania. We will never forget the sacrifices made and the resilience that united our nation in the face of tragedy.
