⚠️ Small and large dams pose a variety of safety risks. Smaller dams, such as low-head dams, may not always appear to be dangerous, but unfortunately many people have died by getting trapped immediately downstream. Stay away from low-head dams.
⚠️ Know before you go! Before fishing, boating, and other aquatic recreating, look at a map to see if there are low-head dams in the area. Our friends at Indiana Department of Natural Resources have a handy map at https://www.in.gov/dnr/state-parks/recreation/water-trails/water-trail-safety/low-head-dams

Like warmer weather but not the 🦟 mosquitoes that come with it? Same here! 🙋
➡️ Please make decisions to reduce mosquitoes that are safe for your family, your pets, pollinators, and fish. Don't waste your money on methods that are ineffective and do more harm than good.

❓ Word Wednesday: what is a "low-head dam"?
Many of these were constructed to regulate water levels for a variety of needs: irrigation, municipal water supply, hydropower, and historical mill operations.
⚠️ These have been colloquially known as "drowning machines" due to their powerful recirculating undertow. Stay away from low-head dams and stay safe!

👀 Looking to save on your water bill AND reduce flooding? Consider native plants in your landscaping!
🌿 Our friends with the Indiana Native Plant Society have excellent resources to select appropriate plants, and where to buy them.

6️⃣7️⃣ If you have no idea what we are referencing regarding the numbers, count yourself lucky! 😜😆
🐟 Dissolved oxygen is what fish "breathe", and coldwater fisheries like trout and salmon require high levels. Cold water holds more dissolved oxygen. Indiana's creeks and rivers average about 9.6 mg/L.
➡️ For cooler creeks in the summer,
💚 avoid using excess fertilizer
🌳 allow trees to grow along the creek
💩 pick up after pets
🌼 plant native wildflowers, grasses, and trees to reduce erosion
