As we head toward this season’s opener (and the sooner the better, Let’s take a look at some MV individual player statistical history, and the impact of recent seasons on that list. These names are a trip down memory lane.
Rushing – Monte Vista’s all-time career rushing leader, in rushing yards and attempts is Schon Branum, who rushed for 3,565 yards on 508 carries from 1985-87. Julian McMahon made it into the top 25 off last season and will surely move up the list this year. Tom Haug is the single season leader in yards with 1,758 in 2003, while Colin Behring leads with 289 attempts in 2001. Peter Wyatt once carried 48 times in a single game, while Haug rushed or 278 yards against Foothill in 2003.
Receiving – School season and career receiving records are shuffled around between two great Mustangs: Sam Desa and Bryce McGovern. Sam leads in career receptions with 164 and career yards with 3,174. Bryce’s spectacular season in 2009 yielded 106 receptions and 2,063 yards. TJ Marston and Trae Banda had the mot receptions in a game with 16, while Bryce went for 300 yards against Heritage in 2009. Jacob Shehata cracked into the career leaders last year also caught 13 passes against Amador Valley to place him in a tie for single game receptions.
Passing – When you think about Monte Vista passing records, a lot of familiar names come up: Kyle Wright, Jake Haener, Brett Nottingham, Drew McAlister, Jeff Lockie, Jack Stewardson, etc. Check to end of this post for the all-time leaders in various categories.
What’s maybe more fun is to look at surprises in some of the stats that we have captured. Who has the best completion percentage? Dylan Devitt in 2021 completed 71% of his passes. I don’t want to name who threw the most interceptions, but two recent guys led for their career and a season.
Kristian Hansen, from 1987, had the best passer rating. This, by the way, is a troublesome statistic for our record books. The passer rating is computed differently for the NFL and NCAA than it is for high schools. We chose to match the high school calculation, even though Maxpreps doesn’t use it. Maybe sometime they will all agree and we can fix that. Speaking of passer rating, Brayden Turner had the 8th best passer rating in a single game last year when the Mustangs played Bellarmine. His 60% career completion percentage has him 5th on the all-time list.
