Thanks to everyone who participated in a Memorial Day parade, visited a soldiers grave, or stopped by a memorial to remember the sacrifices that were made by those who are no longer with us.

The Dansville branch of the Genesee Valley canal provided a new way of transportation for the residents of our area, a way for our farmers to transport their goods, but also a new way for common diseases to come into canal ports like Dansville, Woodville and Kysorville. The 1840s in America were marked by significant, often fatal, outbreaks of communicable diseases driven by poor sanitation, increased movement of people, and lack of medical knowledge. Major epidemic threats during this decade included Cholera, often spread through contaminated water and food, Scarlet Fever: a major cause of childhood death, with fatality rates exceeding 30% in some areas between 1840 and 1883, and Smallpox, a long-standing epidemic threat that continued to cause severe outbreaks throughout the 19th century. Stop by the Kysorville cemetery to admire the restoration work that is being done, but also to take notice of the number of children's graves as well as those of adults who may have died of diseases that traveled here by canal.

A HUGE THANK YOU to the volunteers who worked all morning in the cold and rain to unload our residents' vehicles at Spring Clean Up Day , including members of the Fire Department, Town Board and Planning Board members, Highway crew members, and more. One of our town residents emailed, "Great job! Just want you to pass the word to all who worked the West Sparta Clean Up Day, it was a terrible rainy day, they all did a fantastic job, thanks." Thanks also to the town residents and property owners who took the time and trouble to clean up their yards and buildings and make West Sparta a Town we can all be proud of.

Congratulations to our two talented "Teen Honorees", Nolan Dezarn and Hayden Severson, who were honored at the County Youth banquet. Both are hard working students at Dansville High, serve as volunteers in the community, and have plans for college.
