Andy and Janet Fielding were sworn in Aug. 21 as new members of the Rotary Club of Madison County. Andy, who is retired from Purina, was sponsored by Frank Ginn. Andy’s wife, Janet, a retired educator, was sponsored by Nancy Schillo. Pictured (L-R) are Rotary President Zach Mitcham, Ginn, Andy Fielding, Janet Fielding, and Schillo. The Rotary Club of Madison County is a service organization that focuses on helping the citizens of Madison County in a variety of ways, such as building ramps for those in need, providing wheelchairs and other handicap equipment to those with mobility issues, delivering Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors, helping others with food security issues, and reading with children who need support. We are always looking for more people with a passion for helping their Madison County neighbors. James Catlett of Sensible Automation Solutions (sensibleautomationsolutions.com) spoke Aug. 21 to the Rotary Club of Madison County about his automation company. Founded in 2013, the company specializes in robotics, control systems, CNC machining and custom automation, with clients that include automotive, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. Catlett highlighted his company’s work with nonprofit SIRUM, building automated equipment that helps process donated medications so they can be provided to patients at a much lower cost. He also discussed a smart cane being developed to assist elderly and visually impaired individuals using sensors and LiDAR technology. Catlett plans to relocate the company from Alpharetta to Madison County, with the new facility expected to be operational by the end of the year. He hopes to work with Athens Technical College and other local programs to provide internships, training and career opportunities in advanced manufacturing. Catlett said Madison County’s rural character, available land, proximity to educational resources and small-town sense of community were important factors in choosing the area for his family and growing business. The Madison County Rotary Handicap Ramp Crew constructed a 4X5 landing and a 12 ft ramp Aug. 13 for Billy and Teresa Knight on Hardman Morris Road in Colbert. The Knight family has lived in Madison County for 30 years. Billy Knight worked with the Oglethorpe County EMS system and retired after 40 years of service. He has significant heart issues and tires easily when physically active. His wife, Teresa, also served with EMS with their long Distance EMS Services during her career and must have oxygen and also has severe rheumatoid arthritis. They have two caring sons, Matthew and William, who help care for them in their senior years. They attend Riverside Baptist Church and were grateful for the new entrance to their home. The Rotarians and volunteers participating in the construction of ramp number 1,028 were Alan Phillips, Mitchell Hill, Don Sullinger, Walton Hill, Gerry Carroll, Guy Spencer, and Ed Brown. Calvin Ward was recognized for his longstanding commitment to Rotary and his community with a Lifetime of Service Recognition during the Rotary Club's Aug. 14 meeting. Before receiving the honor, Ward provided the Friday Moment of Rotary, reflecting on the organization’s reach and the privilege of being part of it. He recalled the local club’s early days and pointed to the many ways Rotary has served the community over the years, from reading with children and delivering meals to supporting the senior center. Ward reminded members that these local efforts are part of a much larger organization doing good around the world and encouraged them to appreciate the difference they can make through Rotary. Following his remarks, District 6910 Governor Paul Matthews joined in presenting Ward with the recognition, noting the work Ward has done for the community, his continued service, and the example he provides for others.

Rotary District 6910 Governor Paul Matthews visited the Rotary Club of Madison County Aug. 14 and focused on Rotary International’s theme of “creating lasting impact.” He shared several examples of Rotary’s impact internationally, including a powerful story from Bali, Indonesia, where a former hotel security guard and coffee-bean picker fell from a ladder while picking coffee beans and was left paralyzed. He had been confined to his bed for four years before Wayan, a Balinese Rotarian, learned about him and began organizing help. The man received medical care, physical therapy, a wheelchair, and eventually a loom that allowed him to earn a living. He went on to build a successful weaving business employing 40 women in his community. Matthews used the story to encourage Rotarians to think beyond completing a service project and consider whether their efforts create meaningful, sustainable change. Members of the Rotary Club of Madison County and volunteers constructed their 1027th handicap ramp in a carport, consisting of two access ramps of 12’ and 16’, with two landings, 4’x 3’ and 4’ x 5’ on Thursday, August 6th, for Norma Rodriguez, who lives on Candance Court in Colbert. Norma lives with her daughter, Mayra, and Mayra’s husband, Joe Wood. Aging comes with intermittent bouts of debilitating medical problems. Norma has recently been wheelchair bound but is on the mend walking with a cane. Now that Norma no longer has to contend with stairs, she says she “feels like a free woman,” and looks forward to returning to the Madsion County Senior Center. The Rotarians and volunteers who worked on the ramp included Bruce Gandy, Gerry Carroll, Mitchel Hill, Don Sullinger, Ed Brown, Alan Phillips, and not appearing in the photo, Walton Hill.

The Rotary Club of Madison County is revitalizing its Transport/Mobility program. Rotary is taking donations of gently used handicapped equipment, which will be provided at no cost to community members in need of such items. Equipment includes wheelchairs, walkers, rollators, knee walkers, crutches, canes, and shower chairs. We have a new storage building and are seeking to increase our inventory of equipment so that we can serve as many people as possible. If you have gently used equipment you would like to donate for use by your fellow community members, please contact us at [email protected], and a team member will get back to you.

During her Aug. 7 presentation to the Rotary Club, Alissa Northrup from Advantage Behavioral Health Systems highlighted the deployment of their new mobile behavioral health clinic, a retrofitted 37-foot RV stationed at Madison County Memorial Park (61 Johnson Drive in Danielsville) from Tuesday through Thursday between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Designed to bring confidential, comprehensive care to individuals struggling with opioid use disorder and other behavioral health needs, the program offers Office-Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT) using medications such as Buprenorphine, Suboxone, and Naltrexone. Beyond medication-assisted treatment, Advantage provides a holistic support system that includes telehealth prescriber appointments, medical monitoring, individual and group counseling, family education, and peer recovery coaching from individuals with lived experience. They also offer mental health assessments, crisis interventions, community outreach, and free educational workshops on trauma-informed care and naloxone/Narcan administration to help prevent overdoses. Walk-ins are welcome, services are available to adults with or without insurance, accepting Medicaid, Medicare, uninsured patients, and select private insurances. The Madison County Rotary Club Ramp Crew constructed its 1026th handicap ramp, a 12-foot access ramp, for Steve Lipham on Sears Drive in Comer on Thursday, July 30. Steve is a longtime area resident whose family has deep local roots. He is living on the family’s land, but having lost his parents and brother, he now lives alone. He is gregarious by nature and has a remarkable working history. He was a Union Stagehand with Local 927 in Atlanta and worked at the Fox Theater, among other venues. Unfortunately, age is now hampering his mobility. Steve is a member of the Riverside Baptist Church, and he joined the ramp crew in the accompanying photograph. This week’s ramp crew consisted of Gerry Carroll, Don Sullinger, Bruce Gandy, Walton Hill, Ed Brown, Guy Spencer, Mitchell Hill, Alan Phillips, and John Taylor. Congratulations to award winners at the Madison County School System’s 2026 Convocation July 31. Members of the Rotary Club of Madison County appreciate the service of the school staff and pitched in to honor three of the system’s top performers with $500 checks. They included countywide “Teacher of the Year” Kim Smith, “Support Staff Person of the Year” Lauren Davis, and “Promising Educator of the Year” Abby Tedder.
