Great Salt Bay Sanitary District

Great Salt Bay Sanitary District G.S.B.S.D. is a quasi-municipal water/wastewater treatment facility covering the towns of Damariscotta, Newcastle, and part of Nobleboro

The District employs 5 fulltime employees; Scott Abbotoni-Water Division Manager, LeeAnna Hutchings-Wastewater Division Manager, Julie Hart-Office Manager, Sal Bartolotta-Plant operator, and -Plant Operator
The office is open Monday - Friday 7am-3pm
The District is overseen by a board of trustees voted on by the towns served. The current trustees are Allan Ray(Newcastle), John Gallagher(Damariscot

ta), William Brewer(Damariscotta), Raymond McConnell(Damariscotta), (Newcastle), and Bobby Whear(Nobleboro). The drinking water is pumped from Little Pond to our two storage tanks, one located on the Standpipe Rd in Damariscotta, and the other is on Academy Hill in Newcastle. The wastewater is treated at our Piper Mill Rd facility in Damariscotta, and pumped to an outlet in the Damariscotta River.

At approximately 8:30 this morning, during the Academy Hill Rd reconstruction project in Newcastle, Hagar Enterprises inadvertently pulled a service line out of our 8” water main in the road. It was repaired by 12:30, but in the process of shutting it down, repairing it, and getting it back in service, it may have gotten some air trapped in it and probably stirred up some sediment in the pipe. If you notice your water looks “milky” or has a brownish color, just run the water to flush it out. We apologize for the inconvenience, assure you it’s safe to drink, and please understand this happens on construction projects everywhere. If you have any questions, please call the office at 563-3010. Thank you

Due to the number of people that are infected with COVID 19 growing, and the Great Salt Bay Sanitary District’s concern for our customers and employees, we are going to be making some changes.
Starting next week, on April 6th, we are going to be dividing our crew into two teams of two operators. They will be working two weeks on and two weeks off to try to prevent losing our whole crew to a quarantine in the event one of them should become exposed. Our crews health is crucial to providing safe drinking water and fire protection, as well as treated wastewater, for our customers.
Seasonal water service start-up will be a slow process, but we will get it established as soon as we can with our limited resources.
GSBSD hopes everyone understands the reason for these changes and apologizes for any inconvenience it may cause.
The District office will remain closed to foot traffic until this situation is over. You can still mail in payments, use the drop box at the office, or use the link on our website, www.GSBSD.org
If you have any questions, feel free to call the office at 563-5105 or 563-3010 and leave a message.
Thank you and stay well everyone!

Serving Damariscotta, Newcastle, and Nobleboro, the GSBSD is committed to providing safe drinking water and wastewater management.

Please remember, toilet paper and human waste only.

North Port Utilities wants to remind users that paper towels, as well as both “flushable” and “non-flushable” wipes will block the sewer system, leading to lift station and pump failures, not to mention sewage spills.

Please do your part to save us from unnecessary clogs and backups.

To help keep these systems functioning properly, the DEP is reminding people that the following products should not be flushed:

GSBSD is doing what we can to help keep our customers and staff safe from the COVID-19 outbreak. Due to that, we are keeping our office closed to the public until further notice. You can still make payments by phone or on our website, gsbsd.org. There will still be someone to answer our phones during normal business hours, and of course we have an operator on call 24 hours a day.

Due to the recent concerns about COVID-19, or Corona Virus, and the shortage of toilet paper, GSBSD would like to remind our customers that if you are using "flushable" wipes or baby wipes instead of toilet paper, DO NOT flush these items! The only thing that should be flushed are human waste or toilet paper. Any of the other items cause our pumps to become plugged and makes for a huge amount of unnecessary work for our crew, and could cause back-ups into peoples homes.

High Street and High Meadows Residents,

Today, September 5th, Great Salt Bay Sanitary District and Hagar Enterprises will be digging up a water leak in front of the complex on High St. We hope to fix this as quickly as possible, but without knowing the cause of the leak, this could be an all-day process.
At times, and maybe even for an extended period of time, this may require us to turn off the water to complete the repair. We understand the inconvenience, and hope you understand this isn’t fun for us either.
It may even require us to close the road to traffic, but you will certainly be able to get out one way or the other.
We plan on starting this first thing in the morning (between 7 & 8am). If you have any questions, please call the office at 563-3010.
Again, Thank You for your patience and understanding.

This goes to show, “flushable” wipes are not truly flushable. The sewer pump under this pile has to be replaced because it burned up. It took the crew more than half the day to get this cleaned up, and that’s not the end of the expenses.
If it’s not human waste or toilet paper, please don’t flush it!

As of today, October 16th, the district personnel have turned the seasonal water supply on Cottage Point off.
