We want to extend a massive thank you to Firehouse Quilts of Houston County, GA for their incredibly generous donation of quilts! 🧵❤️

These beautiful quilts will be given to individuals and families in our community who have been displaced by fires or other emergencies, providing comfort and warmth during some of their toughest moments.

We also want to send a special shoutout and thanks to Ken Lecroy and Georgia Arson Control for connecting us with this amazing organization and personally delivering the quilts to our station.

We are so grateful for neighbors and organizations that look out for one another. Thank you for helping us comfort those in need!

The Dalton Fire Department is deeply saddened by the passing of retired Battalion Chief Leon Jefferson “Jeff” Tallent, Jr.
Chief Tallent dedicated 31 years of faithful service to the citizens of Dalton, retiring with honor as a Battalion Chief. During his career, he earned the respect of his fellow firefighters through his leadership, dedication, and steady commitment to serving others. He was also the 52nd graduate of the Georgia Smoke Diver program, a significant achievement that reflected his toughness, discipline, and devotion to the fire service.
Chief Tallent’s impact reached far beyond his rank. He was a trusted leader, mentor, and brother to the men and women of the Dalton Fire Department, especially those who served alongside him on Battalion III, “C Shift.” His quiet strength, servant’s heart, and example of hard work left a lasting mark on our department and community.

UPDATED 5/20/26 8:30 am - All three firefighters were treated and released from the hospital last night and are recovering at home. They're OK.

Original post: Three Dalton firefighters were sent to Hamilton Medical Center to be treated for apparent heat exhaustion after responding to a house fire on Bedford Drive Tuesday evening. Fortunately, all three are expected to be treated and released tonight. Happily, none of the residents of the home were injured in the fire, but the structure sustained heavy damage. The fire is now out.

The fire at 1906 Bedford Drive was first reported at approximately 5:30 pm on Tuesday. Responding firefighters found that the fire had spread to the attic when they arrived. All available Dalton Fire Department units responded to the scene to get the fire under control. The Whitfield County Fire Department also responded to the scene on mutual aid and other WCFD units responded to calls for service within the City limits while the Bedford Drive response was underway.

The cause of the fire is being investigated. Early indications are that the fire began while the family was grilling in the back yard and spread to the back wall of the house.

Throughout the school year, Dalton firefighters have been doing double duty as guest teachers in 5th grade classes at each of the Dalton Public Schools GA elementary schools. Our annual Class 5 program is designed to teach fifth graders important fire safety information to help keep them and also their families safer from fire. The program covers the history of the Dalton Fire Department, fire and life safety goals and weather-related emergencies. One of the main fire and life safety goals is to complete a home escape plan in the event of an emergency.

We have had amazing support from our Teachers, Support Staff and Administration from each of the schools. Part of the program consists of lesson plans and completion of a workbook. In addition to this, the schools could earn extra credit by teaching younger children, making posters, giving morning Fire Safety announcements and being leaders in the school. The school with the highest percentage of participation and extra credit wins a pizza party and have the school’s name placed on a trophy. With the help of our amazing teachers, participation increased to 92%! At the end of the year all 5th grade students get to have a field trip to Dalton Fire Station 2 training center. Groups of students go to different stations learn about specific jobs and equipment used by the Dalton Fire Department. This is followed by a live fire exercise performed by the on-shift personnel. This year, the overall winner is Park Creek Elementary. This group did an amazing job, including, creating a Class 5 mascot!

The Class 5 program finishes each year with a field trip to our training facility at Station 2 to learn a little more about how our firefighters work together on a fire engine, a rescue truck, and our tower truck. They also get a chance to learn a little more about fire extinguishers and some of our other equipment. For the main event, we give the students a chance to watch as we perform a live fire training exercise in our training facility. It's not always easy to get fifth graders to pay attention, but they're always locked in when our trucks roll onto the training ground and our firefighters work together to put out the fire. We've hosted students all week and we'll have another group Friday to wrap up the class.

It's been a great year in our Class 5 program and we're thankful to the students of Dalton Public Schools for being attentive and doing such a great job with their fire safety education. This program could not work without the help from members of the Dalton Fire Department. The entire staff help in some way to ensure the success of the program. . A huge and very heartfelt thank you to Marco and Eliza Avilla of Gondolier Pizza for the help with pizza for the students and to Synovus for making sure we had water to give out. Great partnerships make this an amazing chance to teach a remarkable program to our students. And our teammates at the Dalton Public Works Department and the Dalton Parks and Rec Department did a great job setting up bleachers in the pouring rain earlier this week so our students could enjoy the demonstration.

Knowing how to prevent fires in the home and knowing what to do when one breaks out can literally mean saving lives. We're happy to partner with our local school system to make sure that our students are safe.

WINNER, WINNER, PIZZA DINNER!

A huge shoutout to the incredible 5th graders at Park Creek Elementary!

As part of our Class 5 Program, these students didn't just learn about fire safety—they became leaders. By stepping up and teaching their younger classmates how to stay safe, they earned enough credits to take home the top prize.

Watching these students pass on life-saving knowledge to the next generation of Cheetahs was truly inspiring. Great job, Park Creek!

This celebration was a true community effort! We want to extend a massive thank you to those who helped make this event a success:

Gondolier Pizza: For providing the delicious pizzas that fueled our champions!

Synovus Bank: For keeping everyone hydrated with the donation of water!

Dalton Public Works & Dalton Recreation Department: For their hard work in providing and setting up the bleachers so everyone had a front-row seat to the fun!

Community safety is a team effort, and we are proud to work alongside such amazing local departments and businesses.
