πŸŽ’ National Preparedness Month β€” Week 2: Build a Kit

When an emergency or disaster happens, you may need to rely on the supplies you already have at home.

This week, take a few minutes to build, check, or update your emergency supply kit.

πŸ’§ Water β€” Have enough water for everyone in your household.

πŸ₯« Food β€” Stock several days of non-perishable, easy-to-prepare foods.

πŸ’Š Medications β€” Include prescription medications and other important medical supplies.

πŸ”¦ Light & Power β€” Flashlights, extra batteries, phone chargers, and portable power banks can be invaluable during an outage.

🩹 First Aid β€” Keep a well-stocked first aid kit and basic personal hygiene supplies.

πŸ“» Stay Informed β€” Have a battery-powered or hand-crank NOAA Weather Radio so you can continue receiving important information if power or cellular service is disrupted.

πŸ“„ Important Documents β€” Keep copies of identification, insurance information, emergency contacts, and other important records protected and accessible.

🐾 Don't Forget Your Pets β€” Include food, water, medications, leashes, carriers, and other supplies your pets may need.

πŸš— Prepare Your Vehicle Too β€” Keep a smaller emergency kit in your vehicle with water, snacks, a flashlight, charger, blanket, and other essentials.

Your emergency kit should fit your household and your needs. Think about children, older adults, disabilities or access and functional needs, medical equipment, and pets when deciding what to include.

You don't have to build everything at once. **Start with what you have and add to it over time.**

πŸŽ’ Build a Kit. Be Ready.

πŸ“‹ National Preparedness Month β€” Week 1: Make a Plan

September is National Preparedness Month, and preparedness starts with a plan.

When an emergency happens, it’s not the time to figure out what to do. Having a simple plan in place ahead of time can help you and your family respond quickly and safely.

This week, take a few minutes with everyone in your household and talk about:

πŸ“ Where will you go?
Choose a safe meeting place in case your family is separated during an emergency.

πŸ“ž How will you communicate?
Make sure everyone knows how to reach one another. Consider choosing an out-of-town contact who can serve as a central point of communication.

πŸšͺHow will you get out?
Know more than one evacuation route from your home, workplace, school, and other places you regularly visit.

❀️ Who may need extra help?
Include children, older adults, people with disabilities or access and functional needs, and pets in your emergency planning.

πŸ“± How will you receive alerts?
Know where you'll get reliable emergency information, weather warnings, and instructions from local officials. Keep Wireless Emergency Alerts enabled on your phone and have more than one way to receive warnings.

πŸŽ’ What will you take with you?
Think about medications, important documents, chargers, emergency supplies, pet supplies, and other essentials you may need if you have to leave quickly.

A good emergency plan doesn’t have to be complicated. **Talk about it. Write it down. Practice it.

Preparedness starts before the emergency. Take some time this week to **Make a Plan.
