Today our U.S. Coast Guard Reserve celebrates 76 years of ensuring our Service is Semper Paratus wherever and whenever our Nation calls. I’ve often spoken of the need to build a Coast Guard workforce with the capacity and capability to meet our strategic needs as well as remain prepared for major contingencies. The men and women of the Coast Guard Reserve are at the heart of this and I continue to strongly advocate for the necessary Reserve force structure for both steady-state and surge operations.

A Coast Guard Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crew and a Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater HC-130 Hercules airplane crew conducted the first post-storm damage assessment flights Wednesday over Haiti following Hurricane Matthew.

- 16 years ago today, Capt. Daniel Burbank became the second officer to become a NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration astronaut. He flew as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Atlantis from Sept. 8-20, 2000.
