Good Evening Costner Families,

This is Dr. Brusie with information for the upcoming week. School is closed Monday in observance of the Labor Day holiday. We look forward to seeing everyone back in school on Tuesday morning. This week we will have a representative from the local Boy Scouts visit our classrooms to share information about scouts. The representative will be at Costner on Wednesday evening at 6pm to meet with any families interested in signing up. Thursday evening is our first Papas Pizza Night of the year. Costner will receive a portion of their overall sales for the day, so we encourage to you support our school by ordering your dinner Thursday evening from Papas Pizza.

Next Tuesday, September 15, is our annual Title I Information night for families. Kindergarten teachers will be presenting information about the kindergarten assessment tool, NC ELI; third grade teachers will be presenting information about the Read to Achieve legislation and how it impacts third graders; fifth grade teachers will be available to share information regarding the science fair and science projects; all classrooms will be open to visit and teachers will be ready to share information on Standards Based Grading and how you can access grades and report cards online. We will also be presenting our Title I plan and how those funds will be spent to improve overall student achievement. This event will take place from 6-7 pm with grade level presentations starting at 6:15 and the Title I plan presentation at 6:30. You will receive a flyer with an RSVP, so please fill that out and send back to school prior to September 15. School is closed for students on Wednesday, September 16 due for a Teacher Professional Development day.

It's not too late to order your student's class t-shirt through the PTO. These shirts are not required, but suggested for field trips and other occasions such as field day. The cost is $8 and you can send cash or a check to Costner PTO. We aren't able to make change, so please send the exact amount. All shirt orders are due by September 17.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership and have a great evening.

Good Evening Costner Families,

This is Dr. Brusie with information for the upcoming week. Our students have been working very hard to learn classroom and school wide procedures over the past few weeks. We have seen this in action in the classrooms and throughout the school. This week we will begin to focus on our first Leadership habit which is Be Proactive. Students will learn about focusing on their circle of influence, being accountable for their actions, and doing the right thing even when no one is watching.

If you received a phone call from School Nutrition regarding a negative balance in the cafeteria, this was sent in error and you can disregard.

This Tuesday our PTO will hold their first open meeting of the year. Come out and see what it's all about and how you can be a part of it. They will meet at the school at 6pm.

Next Monday, September 7 school will be closed in observance of the Labor Day holiday. School will also be closed for students on Wednesday, September 16 for a teacher professional learning day. Thank you for all you do and have a great evening.

πŸ’«πŸ’« WIG Wednesday is back!

Fifth graders in Mrs. Haywood’s class had their first WIG Wednesday of the school year! They met with their accountability partners to share their Wildly Important Goals, check in on their progress, and encourage one another along the way. 🌟

We are excited to watch our student leaders grow, take ownership of their goals, and support each other throughout the year. One team, one goal, one Habit at a time! πŸ’™

Good Evening Costner Families,

This is Dr. Brusie with information for the upcoming week. We had a wonderful first full week of school and we are looking forward to another great week of building routines, relationships, and a love of learning! We appreciate your patience with our bus transportation and car rider lines. If your student is a bus rider please be reminded that students need to be at the bus stop at the established pick up time. If you have questions about pick up times, don't hesitate to call the school. Our car lines are moving more quickly, especially in the afternoons. If your student will have a ride change in the afternoon please be sure to communicate that with the teacher via email or Class Dojo.

This Wednesday our 3rd graders will take the Beginning of Grade test. This is a state assessment that establishes a baseline of reading skills and is used to determine growth at the end of the year. It is part of the Read to Achieve legislation. We will get started first thing in the morning, so it is very important that your student be present and on time for school Wednesday.

We hope you will plan to join us for an open PTO meeting on Tuesday, September 2 at 6pm. You will learn more about how the PTO supports our school and what their plans are for the school year.

Thank you for all you do and have a great evening.

Good Evening Costner Families,

This is Dr. Brusie with information for the upcoming week. First, thank you for helping us to make this an amazing start to the school year. We value your partnership and thank you for the kindness, patience, and grace you have afforded us as we got the year started. Our buses are beginning to get into a routine with their new routes and new riders so the pick up and drop off times will begin to be more consistent. Please be sure to write a note to your child's teacher if their transportation home is going to change. We do need this in writing in the form of a note, email or Dojo message to the teacher.

I do have a few reminders and updates regarding morning drop off and afternoon pick up. We do have fewer staff available for our morning drop-off line, so to make the line move swiftly we do ask that if your students be ready to get out of the car once you stop. Staff will assist students in kindergarten through second grade as needed, but our older students should be able to get the car doors open and exit quickly. All drop off should take place through the drop off line as this is the only place we have supervision. This week our kindergarten students will be in school all day and will be part of the afternoon pick up. They are just learning their car tag numbers and it will impact the speed of our pick up line. If your student requires you to buckle them into a seat, once your student is in the car please pull through the line and into the bus parking lot to buckle them up. This helps keep our line moving safely. We appreciate your help with this.

We would like to thank our amazing Costner PTO for providing staff with lunch as they prepared to start the school year. If you would like to be part of this wonderful team, or learn more about what they do for Costner, please plan to attend the open PTO meeting at the school on September 1 at 6pm.
Thank you for all of your support and have a great evening.

Good Evening Costner Families,

This is a reminder that tomorrow is the first day of school for students. Our doors will be open at 7am and the tardy bell will ring at 7:30am. We will have a full day of reconnecting with old friends, meeting new friends, and learning our classroom and school wide procedures to help us start the year successfully. Our dismissal procedures will remain the same as previous years with car riders picked up in two lines at the front of the building and buses loading students in the bus parking lot. Buses will dismiss at 2:25 and car riders at 2:30. Please be patient with our morning and afternoon buses as drivers adjust to new bus routes and new students. Our car riders will also be adjusting to new car tag numbers, so it will take a little longer to get through the car line for a while. We will work together to make sure your student is safely delivered home to you whether it is on a bus or in a car. We look forward to your partnership in making this a winning school year. Thank you and we can't wait to see you tomorrow.
