Howard Kenton Hicks #2374
End of Watch: June 23 1972

Officer Howard Hicks succumbed to gunshot wounds received four years earlier when he stopped a man for DUI.

He was off duty when he observed the suspected DUI driver South Central Expressway and Overton Road. When the man stopped in a parking lot, in the 3200 block of Southern Oaks Boulevard, Officer Hicks approached him, showed his badge, and told the man he was under arrest. The man pulled out a gun and shot Officer Hicks in the neck, causing paralysis. Officer Hicks remained a quadriplegic until his death four years later.

Officer Hicks was able to identify the shooter, and he was sentenced to 25 years for assault to murder a police officer.

Officer Hicks was a U.S Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Dallas Police Department for one year. He was survived by his wife.

William H. Riddell
End of Watch: June 17, 1892

Officer William Riddell was shot and killed while he and his partner attempted to serve a warrant on a man for carrying a weapon.

The subject had been overheard saying that he would kill any officer who attempted to arrest him. As the officers entered his store he immediately opened fire, killing Officer Riddell. His partner was able to return fire but did not strike the suspect.

The assistant police chief arrived at the scene minutes later and was able to arrest the man. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to hang, but that sentence was later commuted to life in prison. After serving 15 years he was pardoned.

Officer Riddell had served with the Dallas Police Department for three years. He was survived by his wife and seven children. His son, Thomas Anderson Riddell, became an officer for the Dallas Police Department in 1899 and served until his retirement in 1932 as a Sergeant. One of William Riddell's grandchildren, Harry Taylor Riddell, continued the family tradition and became an officer for the Dallas Police Department in 1923. He served until his retirement in 1955 as a Captain.

Leslie N. Patrick #7
End of Watch: June 13, 1901

Officer Leslie Patrick succumbed to a gunshot wound while arresting a man for stealing a horse on Dover Street.

A struggle ensued and the man pulled out a handgun. The subject struck Officer Patrick on the head with the gun and it discharged, Striking him in the head. Officer Patrick was transported to his home and then to the hospital when he became unconscious. He succumbed to his wound two days later at the hospital.

The suspect was initially sentenced to 40 years but in a second trial had his sentence reduced to five years for shooting Officer Patrick and two years for stealing the horse.

Officer Patrick had served with the Dallas Police Department for one year and was survived by his brother and sister. He was buried in Edgewood Cemetery, Lancaster, Texas.

It is with grave sadness to announce the passing of Sgt. Joshua Boykin #8910. He succumbed to his injuries as a result from an off duty airplane crash in Forney, TX. He was a previous member of Dallas PD Traffic unit in the DWI enforcement squad, a motor jock, and finally as a Sergeant at Central Patrol Substation. He will be missed. The Honor Guard will do our part. Rest Easy. We have the watch from here.

Ernest E. Leonard, Jr. #51
End of Watch: May 28, 1935

Officer Ernest Leonard was killed in a motorcycle accident while attempting to catch a speeder near the intersection of South Denley Drive and Stella Avenue.

Officer Leonard had served with the Dallas Police Department for two years. He was survived by his parents, four brothers, and sister.

Cassee Odorous Brewer
End of Watch May 24, 1892

Officer Cassee Brewer was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man for slander at the Union Depot station.

While talking to the man the suspect pulled out a large caliber handgun and began firing, striking Officer Brewer. The suspsect was later apprehended and hung for the murder.

Officer Brewer had served with the Dallas Police Department for three years. He was survived by his wife and children and is buried at Trinity Cemetery.

John Richard Crain
End of Watch May 24, 1923

Officer John Crain was shot and killed at approximately 3:30 am while investigating suspicious activity.

While on patrol he noticed lights on in a pharmacy on Junius Road. As Officer Crain peered into the window a burglar inside shot him in the head with a .38 caliber handgun. Both subjects inside the store were also responsible for the murder of Officer Johnnie Gibson, using the same handgun, one month earlier in almost identical circumstances.

The subjects were both convicted of the murders and executed on March 28, 1924.

Honor Guard attended the street topper Ceremony for Bill Daugherty today

Today, the Dallas Police Department honored fallen Senior Corporal Bill "Doughboy" Daugherty, #3051, with a ceremonial street topper at East bound I-635 Service Road and Skillman Street.



On August 10. 1992 Senior Corporal Bill "Doughboy" Daugherty, #3051 who was assigned to the Traffic Unit, was working radar as element #974 for the National Maximum Speed Limit, merged in the eastbound lanes of the 9800 block of LBJ Freeway (I-635).



A speeder went by and Doughboy went to pull the vehicle over on his motorcycle. As he merged onto the freeway from the shoulder, Doughboy was thrown from his motorcycle caused by an uneven surface between the shoulder and the freeway from previous construction work.



He was transported to the hospital and ultimately passed due to his injuries on August 14, 1992.



During his tenure he received 40 police commendations, a Life Saving Bar, and was Officer of the Month in February of 1979.



Members of the command staff and the Department, along with members of Officer Daugherty's family were in attendance for the unveiling.
