It is with heavy hearts that the Lakewood Library Friends share the news of the passing of a true library champion, board member, and dear friend, James Egar "Ed" Palmer, Jr.

A lifelong Dallas resident and graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Ed returned home in 2001 after his retirement and immediately threw his heart and soul into supporting the Lakewood Branch Library. For nearly a quarter-century, Ed was a foundational pillar of the Lakewood Library Friends, serving as a multi-term Chapter President, voting board member, and Advisory Board member.

Ed was, above all, a true bibliophile. He collected and read thousands of signed first-edition books, meticulously organizing them on spreadsheets with the ability to find them on his shelves. His love for literature took him to local author signings and yearly trips to the Texas Book Festival in Austin.

Whether he was physically sorting heavy boxes of books for our very first big LLF book sales, hanging artwork on ladders for the Lakewood Art Show, carrying the LLF banner in the Lakewood 4th of July Parade, or connecting with neighbors at Tietze Park, Ed poured his energy into everything he did.

Ed’s advocacy extended far beyond our local branch. Sharply dressed in his signature suit and tie, Ed spoke directly to the Dallas City Council about the critical funding needs of our public libraries; and when Ed spoke, everyone listened. His leadership led to his appointment to the Dallas Municipal Library Board representing District 14, eventually serving as Chair in 2010, as well as serving as a Director on the Friends of the Dallas Public Library board.

Above all his achievements, Ed will be remembered for his warmth. A common saying at the Lakewood Branch Library was that anyone who interacted with Ed always had a better day. His kind, thoughtful, and generous spirit left an indelible mark on our community.

We extend our deepest condolences to Ed’s family, friends, and everyone in our neighborhood whose lives were touched by his dedication and kindness.

Thank you, Ed, for making our library and our community a better place. You will be deeply missed. β€οΈπŸ“–
