If you’ve driven around Richardson, then you have probably noticed the five new colorful traffic signal boxes that were recently installed as part of the City’s fifth annual Traffic Signal Box Art Contest.

This year’s theme was “Community” and were installed at the following intersections:

• West Renner Road & Waterview Parkway (Artist, Ardent Lee)
• East Renner Road & Shiloh Road (Artist, Owen Craven)
• Abrams Road & Buckingham Road (Arist, Emily Adams)
• East Arapaho Road & North Greenville Avenue (Artist, Kathryn Weber)
• West Arapaho Road & West Shore Drive (Artist, Fred Lockwood)

Winners were chosen by a selection committee comprised of members of the Cultural Arts Commission and Richardson Rotary Club.

Tonight marked the first night of the Richardson Citizens Academy and Resource Education Series, better known as CARES.

Participants kicked off the free eight-week program by beginning an inside look at how the City of Richardson operates and meeting some of the employees who help deliver City services each day.

Over the coming weeks, CARES participants will meet each Thursday evening for interactive sessions focused on different City functions. The program includes presentations from City departments, tours of facilities, on-site demonstrations, and opportunities to ask questions directly of staff.

We’re excited to welcome this year’s class and give participants a closer look at the people, programs and services that keep Richardson moving.

City Manager Don Magner has appointed Katie Barron as the City of Richardson’s Director of Engineering and Capital Projects.

Barron has served as Assistant Director since February, overseeing the City’s capital improvement program and helping to guide completion of projects included in the 2021 Bond Program while assisting in the development of Richardson’s 2026 Bond Program.

As director, Barron will oversee Richardson’s capital improvement program and major infrastructure projects, including planning, design and construction.

She will begin her new role on Oct. 5

September is National Preparedness Month, an opportunity to promote family and community disaster and emergency planning for not just the month of September, but throughout the year.

In Richardson, the Office of Emergency Management provides information and tools to prepare your family, home, and neighborhood for natural disasters and other emergencies that affect everyone.

Look out for important weekly information this month that we will be sharing to help keep you safe and well-prepared, including making a plan and building an emergency kit for you, your family, and pets.

The City will test its Outdoor Warning System (sirens) at noon today. The test will be a longer, 3-minute siren test. Sirens have been updated with new components including heads, control boxes, chargers, batteries and the addition of new solar panels for all 21 City units and the portable siren trailer, and the manufacturer recommends the longer tests to fully cycle equipment and maintain battery life.

As a reminder, residents are not expected to hear these sirens from inside a house or building. Their primary purpose is to move people indoors and allow them to seek shelter, shut doors and windows and seek more information.

Activation Criteria for use of the Outdoor Warning System:
• Tornado Warning or Severe Thunderstorm Warning with destructive winds are at or above 70 mph for Richardson
• Trained spotters report a tornado with potential to affect Richardson
• Hail of 1.5 inch diameter or greater
• An emergency officials deems it necessary to move people who are outdoors indoors for their safety

Expect changes to your trash and recycling collection schedule next week associated with the Labor Day holiday.

There will be no solid waste, recycling or Brush and Bulky Item Collection (BABIC) service on Monday, Sept. 7, and there will be no make-up days for trash or BABIC.

Recycling make-up days are as follows:
• If your regular recycling day falls on Monday, Sept. 7, your make-up day will be Tuesday, Sept. 8.
• If your regular recycling day falls on Tuesday, Sept. 8, your make-up day will be Wednesday, Sept. 9.

The following facilities will NOT be open on Sept. 7:
• Animal Shelter
• City Hall
• City Hall Annex
• Gymnastics Center
• Library
• Municipal Court
• Recreation Centers
• Richardson IQ®HQ
• Senior Center
• Service Center

The following facilities will be open on Sept. 7:
• Eisemann Center (Hours: Offices Closed, Open 6-10 p.m. for event)
• Heights Family Aquatic Center (Hours: Noon-8 p.m.)
• Sherrill Park Golf Course
• Tennis Center (Hours: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.)

The City Council invites you to Get On Board with one of the City’s boards or commissions.

Join us for an application reception Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 5:30-7 p.m. at Richardson City Hall, located at 2360 Campbell Creek Blvd., Suite 525.

This come-and-go event is a chance to learn about serving on a board or commission, an important role that helps shape policy, regulations, and services that directly impact our community.

Attendees will be able to meet with City Council members and City staff liaisons to hear directly about the work of each board and commission.

School has been back in session for a few weeks, and students across Richardson are settling into their daily routines.

For some students that includes seeing a familiar face twice a day.
