Signed by Fredericksburg founder John O. Meusebach in New Braunfels, this document reflects the financial and logistical networks that supported German immigration and settlement in Texas. Meusebach played a lead role in organizing German communities on the Texas frontier.

History's first draft, sketched by hand ✍️
These rare works by Dr. Charles B. Gillespie show a portrait of the "Discoverer of Gold" James W. Marshall and Sutter’s Mill, where the discovery took place. Drawn from life in 1849, they depict the very start of the California Gold Rush, making them some of the earliest visual records of the moment everything changed.
They are a small example of the historical and impactful items that will live in the Rees-Jones Library of the American West at Southern Methodist University.

A First Look at History 👀 Holly Jeffcoat and Director Russell Martin take in the vivid hand-drawn details of a Kiowa ledger by Etahdleuh Doanmoe ("Hunting Boy"), created in 1876 while he was imprisoned at Fort Marion. Each of the 24 colored pencil illustrations carry a story waiting to be preserved and shared.

Guests began at with Director Russell L. Martin III in the Texana Room, then continued to for tours led by Director Anthony Elia and an inside look at its distinctive holdings.
