At Fighting Homelessness, we are a non-profit organization committed to uncovering and addressing the root causes of homelessness.

Last Friday, Lisa Montes joined me for her first Faith-Based Dorm graduation at Hutchins State Jail.

Over the past four years, I have had the incredible opportunity to witness these men receive their certificates after completing a full year in the Faith-Based Dorm program. Every Monday, I have the privilege of spending time with my brothers, walking alongside them as they grow, heal, and transform into the men God created them to be.

What I never expected was how much they would transform me, too. My own connection with God continues to deepen as I learn to see Him more clearly in each of them — in their courage, their vulnerability, their faith, and their willingness to begin again.

There is something incredibly powerful about watching a man discover that his past does not have to define his future.

Congratulations to every graduate. I am so proud of my brothers and grateful to be a small part of their journey. ❤️🙏

Today was my first day at the Texas Capitol working on our 2027 legislative agenda, and I left feeling very encouraged. 💫
We had a very positive response to our efforts around child support reform, as well as our proposal for a housing pilot for young adults ages 18–24 experiencing homelessness. We also discussed cleaning up previously passed legislation involving funds donated by Texans through DPS/TWC to help eligible young people obtain their driver’s licenses through approved driving schools.

A lot of work is ahead, but today was a strong start. Grateful for the conversations with legislative and policy staff from the offices of State Senator Royce West, Judith Zaffirini, Texas State Senator, Joan Huffman, Senator Pete Flores, Senator Nathan Johnson for Texas Attorney General, and Senator Bob Hall, and for their willingness to listen and engage on practical solutions that can create greater stability and independence for Texans. 💙❤️🤍

Meet Jose and Maria Rivera, a sibling duo who we love dearly and have assisted since November of 2023 when they joined us for our Thanksgiving celebration. At the time, they were struggling to find stable housing, and due to health issues, needed support to obtain medication and more thorough care. In one of our first successes with Jose and Maria, we were able to move them into a new apartment in 2025 - moving in furniture to make it a home and installing railings to support Maria's mobility. We also coordinated physical therapy treatment from HomeHealthcare for Maria so she could continue her mobility rehabilitation, and assisted Jose when he was diagnosed with lung cancer so he could make it to every appointment. We were there every step of the way, and we cherish the ability to make their lives better.

However, we knew better was always around the corner. In 2026, FH was able to move Jose and Maria into a house near to our founder, Lisa Marshall’s home. This house has a yard, garden, and furniture, and is close by to the support networks they need to continue building on their health and independence.

We thank Jose and Maria for their trust in our organization and in our program, the Dignity First Initiative. We also thank our youth volunteers who were absolutely vital to Jose and Maria's journey - carrying and assembling furniture, assisting them in applying for Medicaid, and bringing a youthful joy to the whole experience. At FH, we are dedicated to making new homes and new hopes for all our clients, and are thrilled to have done so for Jose and Maria Rivera. ❤️

What a great afternoon in Vickery Meadow!

We recently met a tenant who reached out asking for advocacy around housing concerns and tenants’ rights. What impressed us most was seeing him bring his neighbors together, creating community and connection through a wonderful afternoon cookout.

This is what advocacy can look like at the neighborhood level: listening to residents, helping people understand their rights, connecting them with resources, and making sure their voices are heard.

We are grateful for our partnerships with the Dallas Housing Coalition, familygateway, and dallasevictioncenter as we work together to support renters and strengthen housing stability.

Fighting Homelessness is proud to be working alongside residents and community partners serving the rental population in Vickery Meadow, District 13.

Strong communities begin when neighbors come together—and when people know they have a voice.

Today we are celebrating our dear friend, Rodney, as he opens the door to his very own apartment! After living at St. Jude Center, Rodney is now settling into a wonderful apartment complete with a full kitchen, a fitness center, two swimming pools, and close to shopping, restaurants, and everything he needs for it to truly feels like home.

Rodney has been volunteering with Fighting Homelessness for more than six years, always showing up with a servant’s heart and a willingness to help others. Whether it’s delivering supplies, encouraging a friend, or lending a hand, Rodney has made quiet the difference in countless lives.

Just a few weeks ago, Rodney drove one of our friends, Jesus, to the DMV and even loaned him his car so he could take his driver’s license test. This week, life came full circle as Jesus helped us move Rodney into his new apartment.
This is what community looks like.

More than anything, we’re excited for Rodney to enjoy something many of us take for granted—a real kitchen where he can bake, cook meaningful meals, and gather with friends around his own table. We can’t wait to share many meals together in his new home.

Congratulations, Rodney! We are incredibly proud of you and grateful for your faithful heart.
Here’s to new memories, new meals, and this exciting new chapter! Welcome home!

Donating = more savings! 💸💸

With the Big Beautiful Tax Bill, there are new benefits to making small donations! Beginning with the 2026 tax year (filing in 2027) people who do not itemize deductions can deduct cash donations to qualifying charities.
You can save:
- Up to 1,000 if you’re single 👩🧑
- Up to 2,000 if you’re married and filing jointly 👩‍❤️‍👨

Qualifying charities include any non-profit organization with 501(c)3 status, including Fighting Homelessness!

In previous years, if you took the standard deduction, your charitable gifts did not reduce your federal taxable income. However, this is a new benefit for all small donors who want to make a change in their community, and can save some extra money too!

Ahead of the FIFA World Cup, the city of Dallas approved $10 million to house 400 homeless residents, as part of an ongoing commitment to providing affordable housing. ⚽️🏘️

However, this initiative uses leftover ARPA funds from the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning many local advocates have been left wondering:
What is the long-term solution to homelessness when this money runs out?

Large sporting events often propel short-term solutions to homelessness that “clean up” the streets in preparation of fans arriving to the city, but fail to address the true causes of homelessness, and provide lasting solutions to keep community members housed.

The World Cup has brought so much unity, excitement, and diversity to our biggest cities. However, it shouldn’t be at the expense of those most vulnerable in our local communities. Fighting Homelessness is actively working to create the long-term, sustainable solutions that Dallas needs most - not just “quick fixes” for when there’s an important event, but impactful measures to make all of our lives better. 🌟

In May, Fighting Homelessness had the privilege of meeting with Ruth Ann Thornton, Director of Child Support and IV-D Director, and Joel Rogers, Assistant Attorney General, from the Texas Office of the Attorney General’s Child Support Division.

These collaborative conversations are an important part of our ongoing commitment to advancing thoughtful, data-informed solutions that strengthen families and help prevent homelessness before it begins.

At Fighting Homelessness, we believe in lasting solutions to homelessness begin with economic stability. We are committed to working alongside state leaders, community partners, and families to build stronger systems that create opportunity, promote self-sufficiency, and improve outcomes for Texas families.

We are grateful for the opportunity to engage with leaders who are willing to listen, collaborate, and work toward meaningful solutions that strengthen families across Texas.

Yesterday, Fighting Homelessness, Dallas Housing Coalition, and Catholic Housing Initiative had the opportunity to meet with Councilwoman Gay Willis to discuss the critical need for zoning solutions that support more affordable housing across Dallas. 🏡📈

Dallas is facing a significant housing shortage, with a deficit of approximately 46,000 affordable multifamily homes and more than 16,000 affordable single-family homes. Addressing this challenge will require collaboration, thoughtful planning, and a commitment to expanding a variety of housing options that serve families, seniors, young adults, teachers, and our workforce. 👩‍🏫👷‍♂️

We are grateful to Councilwoman Willis for taking the time to listen, engage in meaningful conversation, and explore solutions that can help create a stronger, more inclusive Dallas. Every conversation moves us one step closer to ensuring that safe, affordable housing is within reach for more of our neighbors.
