Over the coming days you’ll hear and read that Election Day is X days away. I’m here to challenge that. See, every day that polls are open is Election Day, and every day polls are open is another opportunity to encourage voters you know to vote.
PACs and campaigns work hard funding, organizing and executing plans to get voters to the polls. But you don’t have to feel bad if you (for whatever reason) cannot help with that. YOU are your own campaign and YOU know who among your friends hasn’t voted. All it takes is a few calls, a few texts and a few offers to give folks a ride to the polls to be a part of a grassroots effort to get out the vote.
Democracy works best when we all vote. You don’t have to love or even like all the candidates. News flash: candidates are human. They are imperfect. They cannot be everything to everyone. I know a bunch of them, and I know that, by and large, they are folks who care about our communities and who want to serve. They are doing some heavy lifting on our behalf.
Take some time to get to know their campaigns. Do your best to be informed. Local news outlets, the league of women voters and the campaigns themselves have information about the issues and candidates. I know it feels overwhelming at times, but it’s a small investment that has a great impact on how our government functions.
Monday is the first of our election days. Take advantage and vote early. Then, find some time each day to get others to the polls. We have 13 days of open polls. Here is a link to the schedule and voting center locations in Dallas county. If you don’t live in Dallas county, google your county’s election site and you’ll find something similar. Happy election days!!!
