Teen Online Safety During Summer Break

With school out for summer, many teens are spending more time online through social media, gaming, messaging apps, and streaming platforms. The Lavon Police Department encourages families to talk openly about online safety and digital responsibility.

Tips for Teens:
• Never share personal information online
• Keep social media accounts private
• Be cautious when talking to strangers online
• Think before posting photos or videos
• Never agree to meet someone in person without a parent’s knowledge
• Report bullying, threats, or suspicious behavior immediately

Tips for Parents:
• Know what apps and platforms your children are using
• Monitor online activity and privacy settings
• Encourage open conversations about internet safety
• Set screen time and online boundaries
• Teach teens that online actions can have real-world consequences

Online predators, scams, and cyberbullying increase during summer months when teens are online more frequently.

The internet can be a great tool for learning and connecting — but safety should always come first.

Stay smart. Stay alert. Stay safe online this summer.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

As the month of May comes to a close, we want everyone to know that mental health is important and that we stand with you.

Mental health is just as important as physical health. This month serves as a reminder that it’s okay to ask for help, take a break, and check in on the people around you.

Stress, anxiety, depression, and emotional struggles can affect anyone — regardless of age, background, or profession. You are never alone, and support is available.

Ways to support your mental wellness:
• Talk to someone you trust
• Take time to rest and recharge
• Stay connected with family and friends
• Reach out to a mental health professional when needed
• Practice kindness — you never know what someone may be going through

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available 24/7 by calling or texting 988, the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.

Let’s work together to break the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage open, supportive conversations in our community.

Your mental health matters. You matter.

Here is some information on police departments and traffic citation quotas. For years, you may hear or think that because you may see a police officer conducting traffic stops, they are out there trying to meet a quota.

That is a common misconception. Here in the State of Texas, it is illegal for any police department to establish a traffic stop or traffic citation quota. In fact, the state has made it a law, declaring this illegal.

Transp. Code Section 720.002
Prohibition on Traffic-Offense Quotas

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the Lavon Police Department will have increased patrols and DWI enforcement throughout the city to help keep our roads safe.

We want everyone to enjoy the holiday weekend responsibly and arrive home safely.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over
If you plan to drink, make a plan before you go:
• Use a rideshare or taxi
• Designate a sober driver
• Stay where you are if you’ve been drinking
• Never get behind the wheel impaired

Our officers will be actively enforcing traffic and DWI laws during the holiday weekend.

Let’s work together to protect our community and honor those who served by making safe choices.

🇺🇸 Have a safe and responsible Memorial Day weekend.

As summer approaches and we get out of bikes, remember the rules of the bike safety.

Drivers, be alert for more bikes on the roads due to children being out for summer break. Look twice, it could save a life.

Water Safety Starts With You

As temperatures rise and families head to the lake, pool, and water parks, the Lavon Police Department wants to remind everyone to make water safety a top priority this summer.

Whether you’re boating, swimming, or relaxing by the water, a few simple precautions can save lives.

Boating Safety Tips
• Always wear a life jacket
• Never operate a boat while impaired
• Keep an eye on weather conditions
• Make sure children are properly fitted with life jackets
• Carry required safety equipment on board

🏊 Pool Safety Tips
• Never leave children unattended near water
• Designate a responsible adult to actively supervise swimmers
• Teach children how to swim early
• Use fences, gates, and alarms around pools
• Keep phones and distractions away while supervising children

Children can drown silently in seconds, even in shallow water.
Don’t forget to protect pets around pools and lakes as well.

The best summer memories are safe ones. Let’s work together to keep our families and community safe all season long.

Have fun. Stay alert. Stay safe.
