The Last Chapter
A message from Penny Anderly, Chief of Staff, District 5

Hello all,
Have you ever read a book that was so good that you couldn’t put it down and stayed up all night reading, because you couldn’t wait to find out how it ended? But at the same time, didn’t want it to end because it was so good?
That's kind of how I feel about announcing my retirement effective September 15 after more than 40 years of working in and around this community, the past seven of which have been as liaison for council district 5.
Prior to working for the city, I worked behind the scenes in southeast Dallas-with candidates, elected officials, and community members-connecting people and working to make things better without necessarily being the person out front.
Seven years ago, Jaime Resendez, now serving as Mayor Pro Tem, gave me an opportunity I will always be grateful for: the chance to come out of the shadows and work day-to-day, directly in the community, trying to make a difference. It was an opportunity I didn't take for granted, and one that made these last seven years particularly meaningful.
Thank you, Jaime.
My goal was never complicated. I wanted to help people have the knowledge, resources and opportunities they needed to build better lives and a stronger community. Along the way, I had the privilege of working with many people who care deeply about Southeast Dallas and are willing to roll up their sleeves and make a difference.
There have been challenges, frustrations and yes, victories along the way—just like any good story. And, as with a good book, there are always a few pages you wish you could go back and rewrite.
But mostly, when I look back, I feel grateful. Grateful for the people I've met, the friendships I've made, the lessons I've learned and the opportunity to play a small part in the story of this community.
At 73, I know it's time to finish this chapter. And while I'm ready for some rest, I'm also having that familiar feeling I had with those books I couldn't put down: a mix of anticipation and uncertainty.
The good news is that this isn't just my story. The next chapters belong to all of you. I hope you'll keep writing them with the same determination, pride and love for this community that I've witnessed from you throughout the years.
Thank you for allowing me to be part of the story. It has been an honor.
