Dallas Police Association FOP 716 Protecting and Serving the Men and Women Who Protect and Serve the City of Dallas The early days of the Dallas Police Association were not easy for its members.

HISTORY
The DPA was formed in 1959 by a small group of courageous officers who recognized the need for Dallas' officers to have a voice and representation in issues that affected them. Threatened with discipline and retribution, these officers persevered and laid the foundation upon which the Association was built. The City government viewed the formation of the Association as a unionization of th

e police force. Early DPA members suffered the denial of promotions, transfers to better assignments and even dismissal from the Dallas Police Department as retribution for their Association membership. Despite these hardships, the DPA continued to grow, by focusing on its important mission of representing, supporting and protecting its members; just as it does today. George E. Butler was the first President of the DPA and served in that capacity until 1964. Butler was a supervisor in the Intelligence Unit and spent much of his career handling high-profile cases involving the notable and notorious. He worked many cases involving organized crime and gangsters; and was also part of the investigation of the assasination of President John F. Kennedy. As with many of the DPA’s founders, Butler was branded a radical by city leaders for his organizing efforts. He was, in fact, a visionary who guided the DPA through some of its most formative years. The Dallas Police Association headquarters building has been officially named “The George E. Butler Building” in his honor. In 1983, the DPA helped create the Dallas Police Choir. In 1995, the DPA founded the Wish Upon a Star Foundation. In 1999, the DPA founded the Assist the Officer Foundation.

Special thank you to Dallas Police Association

On behalf of the Dallas Police Northwest NPO officers and Volunteers in Patrol, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Dallas Police Association for providing this year's awardees with a special gift.

Your continued support means a great deal to our team and reflects the true spirit of community partnership and teamwork. Acts like yours strengthen the bond between our officers, volunteers, and the community we proudly serve. Thank you for standing with us and helping us stay energized and motivated as we work together to keep Dallas safe. Secondly, this really meant the world to our volunteers in patrol and helped them feel valued and appreciated for their commitment. It really made the evening for them.

Volunteers in Patrol Overview:

Our Volunteers in Patrol play a vital role in supporting the City of Dallas by assisting with crime prevention efforts, observing and reporting suspicious activity, and serving as extra eyes and ears for our officers. Through dedication, teamwork, and a shared commitment to public safety, they help enhance police visibility and build stronger relationships within the community. Their service allows sworn officers to focus on critical duties while ensuring neighborhoods remain engaged, informed, and protected.

Statement from Dallas Police Association President Sean Pease

The Dallas Police Association is aware of the plea entered today by former Association President Jaime Castro related to the investigation surrounding the 2025 traffic crash that tragically resulted in the death of Atianna Washington.

First and foremost, our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of Ms. Washington. Any loss of life is heartbreaking, and we recognize the profound impact this tragedy continues to have on those who knew and loved her.

Mr. Castro is no longer a member of the Dallas Police Department and no longer holds any status within the Dallas Police Association. His legal matter has now been addressed through the court process, and we respect the outcome reached by the judicial system.

The Dallas Police Association represents the hardworking men and women of the Dallas Police Department who serve this city with honor and integrity every day. The actions or legal issues of any one individual do not define the thousands of officers who continue to put on the uniform and protect the people of Dallas.

As the current president of the Dallas Police Association, my focus remains on supporting our officers, advocating for their safety and well-being, and maintaining the trust of the community we serve.

DALLAS POLICE OFFICER’S PAC

ANNOUNCES ENDORSEMENTS FOR CITY COUNCIL

Dallas, Texas (April 10, 2025) The Dallas Police Officer’s PAC today announced its strong endorsement of the following candidates for Dallas City Council:

Chad West – Place 1

Jesus Moreno – Place 2

Zarin Gracey – Place 3

Maxie Johnson – Place 4

Jamie Resendez – Place 5

Jose Rivas – Place 7

Kathy Stewart – Place 10

Bill Roth – Place 11

Cara Mendelsohn – Place 12

The Dallas Police Officer’s PAC is waiting to announce endorsements in potential run-off races or has chosen not to endorse a candidate in the other five City Council races.

“After extensive research and in-depth candidate interviews, the Dallas Police Officer’s PAC is endorsing these committed leaders for the Dallas City Council. Each has keenly communicated their pro-public safety principles, pledged to make sure police officers have the resources they need to protect families, and agreed to vote against any efforts to reduce funding for law enforcement,” said Jaime Castro, President of the Dallas Police Association.

“We’ve also received their commitment to adequately fund the Dallas Police and Fire Pension System, which is essential to keeping our officers from transferring to neighboring cities that prioritize the men and women who risk their lives to keep neighborhoods and schools safe from violent crime,” added Castro.

Congratulations to our April 2025, Cop’s Cop, Crytal Almeida!

On April 24, 2018, Dallas Police Officer Crystal Almeida was seriously injured in the line of duty while attempting to apprehend a suspect. In the same tragic event, her colleague, Officer Rogelio Santander, Jr., was also shot and sadly passed away the following day.

As a result of her injuries, Officer Almeida lost vision in one eye and has since faced a long and painful road to recovery. She undergoes daily physical therapy and continues to deal with the physical and emotional toll of the incident. Despite these challenges, she has remained remarkably positive and determined—qualities that played a crucial role in her survival and recovery.

Just a few months later, in July 2018, Officer Almeida returned to active duty with the department’s Gang Unit. Her courage and resilience in the face of adversity have earned her deep respect from her peers and the broader community. Today, she continues to serve with excellence, reminding us all of the strength and dedication that define our public servants.
