In line with the mission of TDCJ, the Dalhart Unit Laundry Department has been actively enhancing its programs to equip offenders with valuable skills they can utilize upon reintegration into society.
The sewing department is responsible for not only repairing and tailoring clothing for both officers and offenders as required, but also for mending blankets, towels, and mattresses. Additionally, the offenders are acquiring skills to create specialty items. The department has produced jackets, miniature uniforms, stuffed animals, hats, and many other products. Among the most sought-after items is the officer bear. They have also crafted a horse and bear that were donated to the Texas Prison Museum. The offenders face challenges with both intricate and simple patterns, utilizing a variety of materials.
When asked what the Offenders have learned during these projects, the following are their own answers:
🪡I've learned time management and how to work on my own.
🧵How to diagnose problems with my machine and how to work on it.
🪡How to follow instructions and use critical thinking to solve problems.
🧵Change of attitude towards projects, jobs, and people.
🪡How I can help get the job done and how to train others to work on a project they think is too difficult.
🧵Better communication skills to deal with others and explain the job being done.
