Botetourt County has what's believed to be two of the few remaining structures of their kind in southwest Virginia: a modest cabin and a kitchen that are remnants of Greenfield's past as a plantation. These structures date back to the 1860s and have been documented by the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT) of the National Park Service in Natchitoches, LA!

Over the past few years, a committed team of volunteers, some of whom are descendants of the Greenfield Plantation, have been diligently undertaking the task of restoring these structures. As we celebrate Black History Month, we want to share a news story and award winning podcast from WDBJ7 that tells the story of Historic Greenfield. https://wdbj7.libsyn.com/black-history-here-at-home-the-historic-greenfield-structures

Want to get involved? The Historic Greenfield Advisory Preservation Council meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 3pm at the Botetourt County Administration Center at Greenfield. Learn more here: www.botetourtva.gov/historicgreenfield

This is amazing news! Thank you WDBJ7 and Leanna Scachetti for highlighting and telling the story of Historic Greenfield!

Incredibly humbled that for the fourth year in a row, an episode of the Hometown Stories podcast has been honored with a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award by RTDNA! I am passionate about sharing this kind of content with our community. I'm also thankful to have a top-notch partnership with our editor Benjamin Riquelmy.

The Historic Greenfield Preservation Advisory Council of Botetourt County recently announced that four members from the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training of the National Park Service in Natchitoches, LA will be at Historic Greenfield Dec. 5-7 to document the slave quarters, summer kitchen, and farm manager’s house.

The documentarians will take 3D images of the buildings. All images they take will become property of Botetourt County and will also become a part of an interactive website once they complete their project.

One of the four people coming is an oral historian, who would like to interview descendants of the enslaved who lived and worked at Greenfield before the Civil War and tenant farmers who stayed and worked in the area for many years afterwards.

An open meeting of the Historic Greenfield Preservation Advisory Council takes place Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. at the Botetourt County Administration Center. There, guests will have the chance to meet the four documentarians, hear what they have to say, and watch a video produced and directed by Ian and Danny Kyle about the preservation site.

Those who wish attending this meeting, or know anyone who would like to share their stories and memories of those who were enslaved and/or tenant farmers at Greenfield, may send an email to Wendy Warren at [email protected] or call/text her cell at (540) 589-8681.

A total of 9 people come out to Historic Greenfield yesterday to clean gravestones, pull up roots and rake leaves at the Preston Cemetery and the Gish Cemetery. The Col. William Preston DAR Chapter chose these two sites to conduct its annual DAR Day of Service.

We picked a great day to do this service project! Tools used were soft brushes, 15 jugs of water, leaf blower, w**d trimmer, clippers, rakes, and a very useful tool called an Up Rooter. Next time we will remember to bring soft rags and wooden skewers (to clean out engravings that were indented).

Many thanks to the following for coming out and helping: Carolyn Burger Wiley, Danny Kyle (member Historic Greenfield Preservation Advisory Council), Jim Johnston (chair, Historic Greenfield Preservation Advisory Council), Beth Pappas (Botetourt DAR Chapter and HGPAC), Wendy Warren (CWP DAR and HGPAC), the Middleton family (Elizabeth, Peter and Isabella) (CWP DAR and CAR chapters), and Maria Stanton (CWP DAR). We were there from 10 am to 4 pm, and got a lot done!

Over 75 people attended the Col. William Preston Memorial Dedication Ceremony at the Botetourt County Administrative Center at Greenfield (in Daleville, VA) last Saturday June 11. This was a collaborative effort sponsored by the Fincastle SAR Chapter and Botetourt County. Special dignitaries included Bruce Meyer, President, Virginia Society SAR and Virginia DAR State Regent LeAnn Fetherolf Turbyfill. Local DAR chapters that assisted with the planning of the program were the Colonel William Preston and Botetourt County DAR Chapters.

Please enjoy the photos from this very special program!

Members of the Historic Greenfield Preservation Advisory Council led a walking tour after the event was over.

It was a beautiful day for this event - congratulations to Rupert Cutler, John Bradshaw, and the Fincastle Resolution SAR Chapter for years of hard work in making the Preston Memorial a reality and a historic destination for people to visit at Historic Greenfield!
