Broadbent Institute | Institut Broadbent Building Canada's movements for justice and equality.

Who we are:

The Broadbent Institute is Canada’s leading progressive, independent organization championing change through the promotion of democracy, equality, and sustainability and the training of a new generation of leaders. We are proud of Canada’s tradition as a diverse, fair, just, and inclusive society. These values matter to us today and they matter to our future. The vast majority of Cana

dians share these progressive values. At the Broadbent Institute, we believe that the progressive principles and collective efforts that have made us who we are as a country can inform new ways of thinking and new approaches to government that equip us to address the challenges facing Canadians. What we stand for:

The Broadbent Institute brings attention to the need to evolve the social democratic values that guide us as a society. Canada currently faces a host of challenges: rising inequality and the loss of secure and meaningful work; the erosion of trust in our democracy; run-away climate change and ecological degradation; and persistent youth unemployment and Aboriginal poverty, to name but a few. We believe not only that these challenges are surmountable, but also that Canada can build on its strengths and chart an innovative path forward that is once again the envy of the world. In service of overcoming these challenges, the Broadbent Institute stands for:

-economic development that is considered together with social development
-sustainable, productive markets harnessed in service of the public good
-public policy that flows from robust citizen engagement in decision-making
-accountable, open, and responsive government
-intergenerational, gender, and intercultural equality
-celebration of the diversity of Canada’s varied communities
-meaningful reconciliation with Canada’s Aboriginal, Inuit, and Métis populations
-respect for the integrity of the ecosystems that ensure our long-term prosperity

Our work:

As an independent and non-partisan organization, the Broadbent Institute works to:

-research and share the ideas that will help create the secure, sustainable future we all desire
-shed light on and counter regressive practices, policies, and ideas
develop the leaders of tomorrow
-convene progressive voices to recast national political conversations
-encourage and welcome open discussion about the ideas that will move us forward
-motivate Canadians to speak and act based on their beliefs

Together, we fuel progress.

-un développement économique qui va de pair avec un développement social;
des marchés productifs et durables qui servent les intérêts de l’ensemble de la population;

M.J. Coldwell helped lay the foundation for Canada's modern social safety net.

As an early leader of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, Coldwell turned the new socialist political party into a well-entrenched and long-lasting force in Canadian politics.

Building the CCF during the Great Depression required dedicated organizers and leaders willing to fight for the working class. From his roots in Saskatchewan, he took the road to Parliament to fight for unemployment insurance, old age pensions, and public health care for all Canadians.

Dave McGrane speaks on the life and political career of M.J. Coldwell on the 'Social Democrats of the North' podcast series.

"When patients access medical care, they should be able to trust that their doctor or nurse practitioner is guided by unbiased medical judgment and nothing else. The involvement of pharmaceutical companies in online prescribing platforms raises questions about the influence the companies have over medical decisions."

Broadbent Institute Research Fellow Danyaal Raza sees US-style medical marketing influencing Canadian healthcare decisions.

The disenfranchisement of unhoused individuals in the Waterloo Region stems from a complex interplay of policy gaps, inconsistent implementation, and systemic inequities.

While the Canada Elections Act formally guarantees voting rights to all citizens, regardless of housing status, structural and logistical obstacles marginalize this population.

Unhoused voters face further exclusion because of inconsistent election rules, inadequate outreach, and a lack of accommodations tailored to their circumstances.

Despite legislative guarantees under the Canada Elections Act, practical barriers continue to hold one of the country’s most marginalized populations back from political participation.

Infrastructure building and industrial policy involves long periods of investment with no immediate payoff.

The political gamble is whether the narrative of nation-building under the context of existential sovereign threats can outlast necessary interregional contestation, not to mention inevitable unforeseeable global shocks that have yet to come.

While ambition and necessity of fast-tracking nation-building projects in the short and medium term should be embraced, it should not come at the cost of circumventing democratic processes.

The return of industrial policy has come with a resurgence in critical attention to the meaning of state capacity, not just as a barometer of state success but even as a barometer of state legitimacy.

Those who were members of a labour union were more likely than non-union members to see immigration as a positive, with strong contributions to the Canadian economy.

This is not a fluke: many Canadian unions openly advocate for the rights of migrant workers, and union membership correlates with favourable attitudes towards regularization, wherein individuals are given the opportunity to apply for permanent residency.

🤝

Members of a labour union were more likely than non-union members to see immigration as a positive, with strong contributions to the Canadian economy. This is not a fluke.
