Check out our latest blog about our nation's Centennial celebration. Most museums are focusing on the Revolutionary War this year (and rightly so), but we thought it would be interesting to take a look back at our Centennial celebration 150 years ago.

Cutchogue Old Burying Ground Tour

The Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council and the North Fork Community Theatre will host their annual tour of the Old Cutchogue Burying Ground on Saturday, October 3, 2026, (rain date Oct. 4th)

The tour begins at a booth on the northwest corner of the Old Burial Ground at 32770 Main Road (corner of Main Road and Harbor Lane). Actors in period costumes recount the life stories of historic figures who are buried in the graveyard.

“Widow guides” dressed in Victorian mourning costumes will guide visitors through the burial ground, where the costumed actors will recount the lives of notable figures in Cutchogue’s history while standing atop their graves. The notables include a veteran of the French-Indian War, an exiled Tory, a beloved school teacher, people who were enslaved, and many more who were responsible for forming Cutchogue as we know it today. This year, in honor of America’s 250th anniversary, we will feature Revolutionary War Veterans buried at the site. The tour will include a brief history of the burial site, and Mary Kalich, a member of the board of directors of the Theatre will give a brief history of the theater and tell how it was once a church.

Tours will start at 2 pm. Tour groups of a maximum of 20 people will be scheduled in 10-minute intervals. Tickets are $25.00/pp (+$3 processing fee) and are available at www.nfct.com or at 631-298-NFCT (6328) All proceeds equally benefit the two organizations that are hosting the tour. We have owned and maintained the Village Green and kept it open and in good shape for community use, which is something that is usually done by municipalities using taxpayer-based funding. We also keep the Green active with our events and offer its use to other non-profit organizations.
After the acquisition of the Old House, the Council systematically went about moving and restoring historic structures that were important to Cutchogue’s historical narrative and to advance local historic preservation. These include the School House, the Wickham House, the Red Barn, the Carriage House, and the Village Garage. These house museums hold thousands of objects from Cutchogue and New Suffolk’s past, and we display and care for these objects to help tell the story of our area’s history.
We have paid to have the Cutchogue Old Burying Ground maintained since 1960 and include a yearly allotment in our budget to catalog, restore, and clean the stones on the site. We also have written and received grants for this purpose and, at our expense, we used a professional site survey and uploaded the information to the searchable database on Billiongraves.com to aid the public in genealogical research.

Thanks to actor and educator Heléna Eilenberg, who performed at today’s event at the library called “Ask Mrs. Lincoln.” She provided an educational and entertaining perspective on the much-maligned first lady. The program was brought to residents at no charge through a cooperative effort between the Historical Council and the Cutchogue-New Suffolk Free Library. Ms. Eilenberg was captivating and had the audience enthralled for over an hour as she stayed in character, portraying Mary Todd Lincoln circa 1875. -ASK MRS LINCOLN, as portrayed by actor and educator Heléna Eilenberg. The year is 1875. Come and speak with Mary Todd Lincoln just after her release from a mental institution. You will meet the most maligned First Lady in a revealing new light. She is portrayed based on her own letters, the writings of those who knew her and the recently discovered records of her insanity trial. Learn about her marriage to Abraham Lincoln, their lives before and in Washington during the Civil War. Learn about their children, how she was perceived by others and what contributed to the image that has lasted of Mary Todd Lincoln to this day.
