The Roundup may be behind us, but Custer State Park isn’t done showing off.

Fall brings golden hillsides, cool mornings and scenic drives that practically demand a few extra photo stops. Spend the day exploring, then make a getaway of it with a stay at one of the Park’s lodges.

The calendar may be getting crowded, but there’s still room for a little adventure.

Welp, another Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival is officially in the books!

From the early mornings and long days to the bison dust, live music, incredible art and more than a little caffeine—it takes a tremendous team to make this weekend happen. Thank you to our staff, volunteers, first responders, law enforcement, partners, vendors, artists, performers and everyone else who helped bring it all together.

And to everyone who came out to experience it with us: thank you! We hope you made some great memories, and we look forward to seeing you again somewhere down the road.

Buffalo Roundup or bust!

Our bison mascot has a ride, a traveling buddy and absolutely no intention of missing the big day. The only question is whether anyone told them the bison are the reason for the Roundup.

We’ll see you Friday, Sept. 25, at Custer State Park!

Check the weather and pack plenty of layers.
Set your alarm. Then double-check that you actually set your alarm.
Decide whether you’ll join us in person or watch from home.
Bring your patience, follow staff directions and enjoy the experience!

One last assignment: if you see a staff member, give them a smile or a friendly thank-you. They’ve put in countless extra hours to prepare—and by Friday morning, many will be operating on very little sleep and a truly impressive amount of coffee.

Let’s go Roundup the Bison!

09/23/2026

Yes, we know—it’s Buffalo Roundup week, and we’re supposed to be a little bison-heavy around here. But the other 71,000 acres of Custer State Park are still waiting to be explored, too!

Roundup week can be a great time to hit the trails, as many visitors are busy enjoying the Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival. One option is the Centennial Trail, which winds through some beautiful Park backcountry. Start near Iron Creek Trailhead and hike toward Legion Lake for roughly eight miles of scenic trail.

Just remember: this is a point-to-point hike. Arrange for someone to pick you up at Legion Lake, or choose a turnaround point before you begin. Bring water, layers and a trail map—and make sure someone knows your plan.

Learn more and review the Centennial Trail brochure before heading out:https://gfp.sd.gov/userdocs/centennial-trail-brochure.pdf
