We are all aware of what Memorial Day means.
That being said an estimated 17-22 Veterans a day commit su***de...
This message is for them;
There is a part of me that will never forgive myself for surviving, especially when others deserved to live more than I did.
That isn't a self-centered view or a call for affirmation, it is a universal narrative told for many from a first-person perspective since man took up arms against one another. Everyone left standing is subject to it, even if they never tell a soul.
The cost of warfare, no matter the politics or reasons behind the greater campaign, is always loss. Someone has to live and someone has to die.
For nearly two decades, I have wrestled with that cost, wondering what led to greater men often with wives, children and brighter futures losing everything in a moment while the rest of us got to live out our lives.
They and the circumstances that led to their loss will be with you the rest of your days. You will always have questions, you will always have guilt, you will always ask "what if?"
But the thing about "what ifs" is that they are pointless and they'll kill you.
You will never get answers. You have to make peace with that, as hard as it is. You will never get to go back in time, you'll never get to trade places.
It truly is what it is.
Ultimately, I've realized that it is not up for us to decide, no matter how often we wish we could trade places with them or struggle to make sense of "why" things turned out how they did.
The best we can do is to pursue the most elusive and sought-after of outcomes for any warrior; to find a sense of peace.
By doing so, by living each day with purpose and a faithful heart, we carry out the missions they never got to complete.
The end objective of every campaign is to go homeโฆ
So many people I know, myself included, struggle with this. Life feels like an award that was not earned, and for the others, a chapter that concluded without closure.
Someone had to bare witness for them. You were chosen for that onerous duty. Only in death does duty end.
See it through.
Remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice, but never forget to live and appreciate growing old in peace.
After all, that's all anyone who ever set foot on a battlefield ever wanted, and it is the purest way to honor those who never got the chance.
Brothers and sisters, we are here for you. ๐บ๐ธ
